A Winter Hike That Almost Didn’t Happen

With winter fading, I seized a last chance for snowshoeing – no risks, no steep climbs, just deep snow and quiet trails. What started as a short walk turned into five hours of joy: untouched powder, frozen forests, and the simple thrill of moving upward. Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you almost miss.

Friends! Finally! I got my day of #snowshoeing!! 😀

I didn't even plan to go very far but the snow and the weather were just wonderful and I felt confident to ascend further.

I didn't go to the summit. I just returned at a point where I admitted that I wouldn't do it for the fun but only for being there. So I returned and had an amazing snow day.

I also met a couple several times and had some nice chats with them - Wich contributed to the good day as well.

Today, I went snowshoeing on the Rax, at an altitude of about 1,700 m, with a super-cool lady. We had 40 cm of wonderful fresh snow. In the many snowdrifts, we sometimes sank 70 cm deep. Because of the avalanche warning and for more wind protection, we stayed mainly in the hilly forest. Not a soul in sight, no tracks in front of us in the snow. It was absolutely beautiful!

Just now returned from a fantastic winter adventure in the White Mountains, NH. Perfect weather and trail conditions allowed me to hike a substantial loop up high -- first ascending to a summit, then hiking a section of the ridge (hiking up and over other peaks), and ending by descending from the last peak. With all of this snow we have been getting in the Pyrenees, the avalanche risk has been very high for many days (weeks).

At this point in time it is even a risk to walk to an unmanned hut for an overnighter. Avalanches have hit some huts in past history and this continual snowfall plus high winds are not making it easier.
