After Gerda rescued Kay from the Snow Queen, they locked her in a cage with #icicle bars, leaving her shards of ice to play with, just as Kay had had upon the frozen lake.
"Hot tears or a warm heart would melt the bars," mused Kay, "but she has neither."
Just as the Snow Queen had promised Kay he would be free if he could form the word "eternity" from the ice shards, so too they left her with a word to form for freedom: it was "compassion."
