  2. If all that holiday stress has you craving a spa day, you’ll probably relate to the Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata). Also known as the snow monkey, this species might be spotted on Japan’s Honshu, Shikoku, or Kyushu islands. Populations that inhabit northern regions have thick fur coats to protect them from cold weather.

On my second day in Nagano / Yudanaka, it was still raining fiercely, but I decided I still want to visit the snowmonkeys!

They are quite adorable! As you can see in the pictures, this particular hot pool was constructed so that humans can observe them more closely, but they bathe in them naturally and voluntarily!

I heard that they get baited to come there in summer (when they wouldn't go there often), but they are not forced to and can roam the area freely. It seems that they are not afraid of the human spectators at all.

  5. In December of last year, my wife and I took my parents to Jigokudani Yaen Koen (地獄谷野猿公苑) to see the #SnowMonkey park. It was raining all morning, but as we drove into the hills, it actually started to snow. My parents, from a little rural town in Australia, were getting to experience peak #Japan, and I think they finally understood why we continue to live here.

For me personally, it was an awe-inspiring experience, and there were hardly any tourists around which meant we got to actually experience it at our own pace. Unforgettable. Here are a few snaps I took with my new camera, as I was fumbling trying to learn how to use it.

Did you know the Japanese Macaque (aka Snow Monkey) lives farther north than any other primate, except for humans?
