75 years ago today, on 17th November 1950, it was 22 year old Tom Rout's turn to be ploughing a field in #Snettisham, Norfolk.
He turned up one of the most iconic British archaeological finds - the Snettisham Great torc...

#Snettisham Hoard F has some very strange stuff going on, but I think I'm starting to understand it.
This paper leads on from one I wrote about the Grotesque torc & lays down evidence for the next paper I'm currently writing...
Enjoy! 😊

A read for the weekend. Related to something - well, two things really - that I'm writing at the mo.
More to come soon, but in the meantime, here's the prequel!! 🤣🤣

Prompted by @tess_machling - more messing about with #lidar data from the UK Environment Agency's National LIDAR Programme, this time with renders of the area around #Snettisham, #Norfolk.
Landscape is ... quite flat, so I experimented with lighting and surface shading to accentuate even the most subtle surface details.
Made with GDAL, Photoshop and Modo - it's definitely not a standard lidar pipeline...
Jumbo-sized renders:

That thing when you post about a #torc you've been looking at & suddenly look at photo close up & realise that, yes, the thing attached to this torc *also* has crap dripped on it, just like so much of the stuff attached/used to repair/added to torcs, but never the complete torcs.
Yet another example of how they were mixing & matching #Snettisham hoards. Honestly, these hoard deposits happened quick - really, really, really quick.

Working with the "everything is 0.000001% #gold " theory, it would take the following number of melted tomatoes to make one #Snettisham Great #torc :
Oh hang on...
Wait a minute...
Ok, forget that...
We just flog this little selection on Ebay and we'll get the £40k needed instead. 😉🤣🤣
-
Searching for #gold stuff and came across a link to this on Pinterest...
A new #torc ! And the same cage terminals as a broken one from #Snettisham (the only other known example of this type).
Except this one has zero provenance of when and where it was found and was sold from a private collection - at Christies in 2013 - to a private buyer.
Sigh...I often wonder how many more there are out there???
So depressing...

3 years ago today, we started The Big Book of Torcs.
We've had 10,129 visitors from 58 #countries (2/3 from #UK) who've read 18,070 pages. Averaging +3000 visitors/year.
Independently peer reviewed paper on Grotesque #torc: 2843 visits. Blogs have done well, with #Snettisham Torc Finders blog: 1538 reads. Near Stowmarket torc piece: 1880. Every page has +300 reads.
I continue to be amazed. It's certainly the way to get research out - here's to 2023! ❤️

Part 2 - This is my #illustration of the top of the bronze Late La Tene #IronAge #scabbard from #Congham #Norfolk ,It was a rare find from a wet deposit in woodland, where it may have been an offering to the gods, it had been folded in two possibly to ritually kill the object, a practice often found with weapons. The decoration is similar to that found on the objects in the famous #Snettisham treasure hoard also from West of Norfolk. #archaeology #LaTene #design #Celtic #weapon #history

Ok folks, I think you're ready for the #goldfinch equivalence!
Not many folks know that every living thing is 0.00001% #gold (yes, really - including humans!!)
Therefore, if you...um...'extracted' the gold you could, theoretically, make a #torc.
Soooo, by that logic, 7,588,000,000 goldfinches would get you enough gold for a #Snettisham Great torc.
[It would also get you a fully deserved telling off from the RSPB! 🤣]
-
Welcome to torc equivalents (usually #goldfinches, but for the uninitiated, I'll leave that for another day!)
Meet Heinz 57 (pedigree name: British #Museum 1991,0501.45). Now, if I tell you this little #Snettisham beauty measures 44 x 43mm, you'll visualise it - but if I tell you it weighs 22g, you'll look at me quizzically.
However, if I say it's the same weight as a multipack bag of #MonsterMunch (flavour of your choice), then you'll know exactly what I mean!!! 🤣
-
I love this photo of the Snettisham Great torc - it's the one place on this torc where you see an element of the maker/finisher going off piste!
Over the rest of both terminals the linear punching (basketwork) is in square blocks of 3 x 3 lines but here, in these two panels, there's triangles and chevrons and they would seem to be the hand of a different person!

A bit more about tubular #gold #torcs...
As I said yesterday, the sheet is really thin, only 0.1mm thick. But the overall effect is to convince whoever saw the torc that it's made of much more gold than it is.
If you compare it to #Snettisham Great torc - which is of same diameter - it looks made of about the same amount of gold - but the Great torc weighs 1084g!
So you could have ten tubular torcs for same amount of gold alloy as one Great torc.
More #BangForYourBuck if gold was scarce.
-
74 years ago today, on 12th #November 1948, Ray Williamson was ploughing a field on the #KenHill Estate in #Snettisham & turned up these amazing #tubular #torcs - the first of many finds which uncovered at the site over the next 50 years.
Tubular torcs like these are incredible - c.200mm in diameter & made of sheet #gold only 0.1mm thick, they each #weigh only c.110g (weight of a lemon or a small bar of galaxy #chocolate ).
More here about the finding: https://bigbookoftorcs.com/2020/07/15/the-torc-finders-of-snettisham/
