I love trains, but I hate train companies:

No rail service between Aachen and any German city, but #SNCB and #DB of course do not allow us to just takevthe connection via Amsterdam instead. We do not hate on rail replacement busses enough!

Le terme « libéraliser » est en fait « privatiser » pour satisfaire des actionnaires et non les voyageurs. On va se retrouver avec le système anglais. Zero investissement sur l’infrastructure, suppression des lignes non-rentables et augmentation des tarifs.

A photo taken in #Brussels in March 2002: back then, #SNCB #NMBS Class HLE16 electrics used to haul some of the international #InterCity trains between #Oostende and #Köln. These locos were able to operate, i.a., under 3kV DC and 15 kV AC wires.

A few thoughts on Belgium public transit (thread):

Belgium is a small country, and major cities are at most two hours away by train, with frequent service. There is a train every 10-20 minutes between Brussels and Ghent, for instance. Small suburban or countryside stops are served less frequently. Buying tickets is easy at ticket machines, and no domestic train reservations are accepted.

Just found out our closest way to escape weather hell these days is to go to the Belgian coast.

Also found out it’s a super quick way to get poor since the train will cost 24 €/person to go there and come back (40+ if you don’t have Train+ :fear:).

That’s twice the price you’d pay in France for the same distance (~110 km). Even the Train+ (the discount card) is twice as expansive. :nard:

So we’re very likely to not go, so that’s a loss for SNCB.

In other news, Belgian #police has since recently gained warrantless real-time access to 21,000 surveillance cameras in trains, subways, trams, busses, and stations. What could possibly go wrong. 😓

Once upon a time, Belgian Railways 🇧🇪 #SNCB #NMBS Class 62/63 diesels used to haul passenger trains, in many parts of the country. On my photo, taken in November 2001, we see one of these engines working a local train in the #Gent area. The consist includes M2 type carriages, with a BD, a 2nd Class Baggage Combine, positioned right behind the loco.

SNCB/NMBS does not seem to get their rolling stock in the same order as their systems claim they are. 1st class on the displays and on the website: at both ends of the train. Reality: it's somewhere in the middle where they seem to be. #sncb #nmbsfail

Hat eine*r von euch Erfahrung mit Kulanzerstattungen bei der belgischen Bahn #SNCB? Hab ein Ticket Brüssel -Aachen im ICE gebucht (Supersparpreis) nicht genau auf das Datum geachtet und dann kurz nach der Buchung gesehen, dass das Datum falsch ist. Also das Ticket nochmal gebucht, diesmal mit dem richtigen Datum.

Hab beide Tickets per Kontaktformular eingereicht, damit sie sehen, dass es ein offensichtlicher Fehler war. Supersparpreis ist ja normalerweise nicht erstattbar ☹️
