A New, ‘Adorable’ #DeepSea #Fish Swims Into View
The bumpy #snailfish, discovered 10,000 feet down off the coast of California, shows that not all denizens of the abyss are frightening. The #bumpysnailfish was among three new #snailfish species discovered off the coast of #California, at a depth of over 10,000 feet, from an expedition led by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (#MBARI).

https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/deepest-fish-1.6799909The #snailfish, of the Pseudoliparis belyaevi species, are the first to be caught below 8,000 meters. Remotely operated cameras lowered from the DSSV Pressure Drop also recorded an unknown snailfish species swimming 8,336 metres deep in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench off southern Japan.
