#SN2023ixf in Messier 101 - the twilight years of the progenitor as seen by Pan-STARRS: https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.04426 -> "We present an analysis of the long-baseline pre-explosion photometric data in g, w, r, i, z and y filters from Pan-STARRS as part of the Young Supernova Experiment, spanning ∼5,000 days. We find no significant detections in the Pan-STARRS pre-explosion light curve. [...] We find no evidence of eruptive pre-supernova activity to a limiting absolute magnitude of −7."

Looked at the #SN2023ixf
AAVSO light curve for the first time in a while today since it’s been cloudy here lately. Looks like the linear decrease phase ended about two weeks ago after ~70 days since maximum light. Starting to plateau now at ~82 days, expected for a type IIL event -
The closest cosmic explosion to Earth in the last 10 years became a record breaker for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI).
The supernova, designated (SN) 2023ixf, was first spotted on May 19, 2023, by Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki. Just an hour after this manifestation, amateur astronomers taking part in SETI and Unistellar's Cosmic Cataclysms program were on the case.

Here is some data on the change in brightness of a few past supernovae.
Luminosity of a Type II SN rises for 1-3 weeks and then declines over months.
Type II-L SNe have a steady decline rate, while Type II-P supernova exhibit an intermediate plateau period with a reduced decline rate.

18 days after it exploded on May 19, supernova SN2023ixf in the Pinwheel Galaxy M101 seems to be dimming a bit, as all Type II SNe do, gradually over a period of several months.
Note that an increase in magnitude by 1 implies a decrease in luminosity by a factor of 2.512.
Pre-explosion mag was ~24.

Clear skies at last, after 3 months of clouds… This is the pinwheel galaxy (M101) with the supernova SN2023ixf (marked with small red lines) that has appeared on May 19. This picture was taken during 2 consecutive nights (May 27 and 28) with a small refractor (400mm focal length). Total integration time was 4h50. Image processed with Pixinsight.

Confirmed that I really saw the supernova #sn2023ixf in the Pinwheel Galaxy M101 with 8” #Dob Instead of SkySafari, this time I used an old 2 min unstretched image from CloudyNights. Marked all relevant star patterns around the galaxy, and confirmed these patterns in the eyepiece. From the triangle of 10th mag stars towards the galaxy, found two stars, 12th mag and 11th mag. They form a nice triangle with the supernova. Its brightness is comparable to the 11th mag star! #Astrodon #astronomy

I finally managed to process my own image of the #SN2023ixf supernova in #M101.
Crazy to think this event actually happend some 21 million years ago, but we can still observe it changing brightness in mere days. -
Finally had time to image and process #SN2023ixf. This is my second Supernova capture this year!
These are both around 90 min integrations. Will make a quick video about this but won't be able to capture further images sadly.

Have not posted in a while - too many other things going on.
Saturday night past, did get to program my robotic backyard observatory to capture a few images (while I was on the road) of new supernova in Messier101: #SN2023ixf. Fortunately dodged forest fire smoke from opposite side of my country - smoke has been coming and going for a couple weeks now.
Only 14 two-minute subs so its a bit noisy. SN is noticeably blue'ish in colour.
