Building #smolBSD on #Alpine is an adventure: one first needs to edit Makefile and replace --quiet with -s (Busybox's sha256sum doesn't recognize the former option), then edit mkimg.sh and remove --show from losetup options (again, a Busybox quirk). Even then, the build is only mostly successful, and my attempt of running a full live setup... makes me think I should have RTFM for #NetBSD first.

My Sunday challenge: installing #Devuan in place of #OpenBSD on my laptop so I can install #postmarketOS on an old tablet, because for some reason I only have a blue USB port on that laptop (my SFF PC has a whole bunch of USB ports, but none are blue). Let's see how well restoring the backup will work once I reinstall OpenBSD.
I wonder how many years worth of work would it take to create a #NetBSD / #smolBSD based mobile distro after #postmarketOS has done more progress...

Sebenarnya ane pengen banget nyobain #smolBSD, ane coba install #NetBSD dengan UTM (qemu). Pakai UTM ini saja sudah merupakan perjuangan yang melelahkan karena UTM masih belum stabil untuk bisa emulasi Unix di x86_64 1.
Ketika akhirnya ane bisa emulasi NetBSD di x86_64 dengan custom (minimal) install, muncul tantangan baru untuk memasang qemu (qemu-system-x86_64) dan harus build dari package source yang ternyata memiliki dependensi yang lumayan banyak karena harus install X11.
Tidak punya banyak waktu dan resources, ane kemudian install dengan full installation. Setelah selesai qemu bisa diinstall dengan baik. Apakah masalah selesai sampai disini? tidak Bahlil, muncul masalah baru yaitu untuk jalankan emulasi img smolBSD maka NetBSD harus menjalankan NVMM https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-virt.html yang membutuhkan module nvmm di-load di kernel. Module nvmm ini membutuhkan fitur vt-x/amd-v untuk bisa jalan dengan baik, problemnya UTM ga support ini.
Pada akhirnya mencoba smolBSD dengan emulasi NetBSD di UTM tidak bisa dilakukan karena keterbatasan dari app virtualisasinya. Mungkin nanti ane mau coba virtualisasi dengan Virtualbox atau VMware.
ane pakai arch64 dari apple silicon. Untuk virtualisasi arm64 lumayan lancar di #FreeBSD sedangkan yang lain masih tricky. UTM paling lancar untuk virtualisasi/emulasi Linux. ↩︎

We want to make BoxyBSD more accessible & enjoyable to everyone and this is one of the first steps. We know, a laggy SSH connection doesn't make fun and therefore, we're also setting up new locations to provide you a better latency independent of your location.
During this time, signups for new users are currently deactivated until the new locations are up and running and the first real-user tests within the new interface have been successfully performed.

I like that with smolBSD, I could build a super tiny dev environment that I can carry with me everywhere.
Even if I'm stuck at some job where I need to use a mac, as long as I have an emulator with MICROVM support I can just launch that, boot in less then a second and get to work.
I guess I could've done something similar before but it's far more effort to build and maintain.
