En la Massachusetts del siglo XIX, una mujer soltera, sin hijos y con problemas de audición no estaba llamada a cambiar el mundo.
Estaba llamada a desaparecer discretamente.Pero Sophia Smith no encajaba del todo en ese molde.
En 1863, tras la muerte del último miembro de su familia, se encontró sola y con una fortuna considerable heredada de las inversiones familiares en ferrocarriles y manufactura.
Era, sin exagerar, una de las mujeres más ricas de Nueva Inglaterra.
Y también una de las más libres… al menos en teoría.Porque en la práctica, su margen de acción era mínimo.
No podía votar, ni ocupar cargos, ni participar en decisiones públicas.
A las mujeres en su posición se les reservaba un papel muy concreto: donar, guardar las formas y dejar el dinero a otros.Sophia decidió no hacerlo.
Buscando orientación, acudió a su pastor, John Morton Greene.
Fue él quien le sugirió una idea que, en aquel momento, sonaba casi imprudente: crear una institución educativa para mujeres.La propuesta no cayó en saco roto.
En aquella época, universidades como Harvard University o Yale University estaban completamente cerradas a las mujeres.
Las pocas instituciones femeninas ofrecían una educación limitada, más centrada en lo “decoroso” que en lo intelectual.
Sophia, que se había formado por su cuenta leyendo, sabía perfectamente lo que eso significaba: quedarse siempre a medias.Así que tomó una decisión clara.
En marzo de 1870, con 73 años, dejó estipulado en su testamento que toda su fortuna —unos 400.000 dólares de la época, una suma enorme— se destinara a fundar un colegio para mujeres con el mismo nivel académico que las mejores universidades masculinas.
Sin versiones rebajadas. Sin concesiones.Murió pocos meses después, sin ver el resultado.
Pero su idea siguió adelante.
En 1871 se puso en marcha el proyecto y en 1875 abrió sus puertas el Smith College con catorce estudiantes.
El plan de estudios no tenía nada de “adaptado”: era exigente, completo y pensado para formar mentes, no solo modales.Hubo críticas, claro.
Se decía que las mujeres no estaban hechas para ese nivel de exigencia.
Que no aguantarían.Lo hicieron.
Con el tiempo, el Smith College se convirtió en una de las instituciones más importantes de educación femenina en Estados Unidos.
De allí salieron científicas, escritoras, activistas… mujeres que ocuparon espacios que antes simplemente no existían para ellas.Y todo empezó con alguien que no pudo estudiar donde quería.
Sophia Smith no dio discursos ni lideró movimientos.
Hizo algo más silencioso y, quizá, más eficaz: usó su dinero para abrir una puerta que siempre había estado cerrada.No pudo ir a la universidad.
Así que construyó una.
Se llama Smith College, y está en Northampton, Massachusetts.
Abrió en 1875 con solo 14 alumnas, y hoy es una institución prestigiosa dentro del grupo de las “Seven Sisters”, los históricos colleges femeninos de Estados Unidos.
Aunque mantiene su enfoque en la educación de mujeres, también ha evolucionado con el tiempo y hoy es bastante más diverso e inclusivo.Tiene muy buena reputación en humanidades, ciencias sociales y también en investigación.
Y lo interesante es que sigue fiel a la idea original de Sophia Smith: educación exigente, seria, sin rebajas por género.No es una reliquia histórica.
