So as a #smartphonefreechildhood parent of 12 and 10 year olds, decided it was time the kids had their own savings accounts to put the odd bit of birthday and chores money they get and encourage a savings habit. Didn't realise an easy offline account was going to be so hard to find. Thankfully, local mutual building society to the rescue. Branch based savings with a passbook. Yey! No app, no online access, local branch to visit. #ChildSavingsAccounts #mutual #CambridgeBuildingSociety #screenfree

This is not defendable. This is nothing to do with free speech, democracy or whatever else gets mentioned to justify the abuse of an entire generation. We need a #smartphonefreechildhood for all children and #safeonlinespaces for teens. Big tech cannot be trusted to deliver that. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/feb/23/15-year-old-girl-misogyny-social-media-online-abuse

Seriously powerful stuff from The Australian newspaper: teens know they are addicted to their phones and want to get off them, but need help. As adults we have a duty to allow a #smartphonefreechildhood for the space for children to breathe and grow away from fear, constant comparisons and social pressures to conform. https://www.theaustralian.com.au/weekend-australian-magazine/these-kids-told-us-they-want-to-stop-scrolling-but-they-dont-know-how/news-story/4e29c69ec64ecb9224658dff912dcd8c

Fellow parents are sharing this link: https://www.smartphonefreechildhood.org/ Probably a good idea. Maybe I can get behind that. #SmartPhoneFreeChildhood
But I find myself distracted by..."Join on WhatsApp" + Instagram & LinkedIn.
Depressing the way nobody (even people running an anti-big-tech campaign) seems to know how to communicate without big-tech these days. It looks like they're *trying*, because there's no link to twitter or facebook. Maybe I should mention mastodon to them in the WhatsApp group!

If we have reached the stage where a parent of 4 under 10-year olds makes the news for wanting to "keep his kids off social media" then we have a problem. A #smartphonefreechildhood becoming the norm is now more urgent than ever. Well done Andy, you are a thoroughly decent human being. #bekind https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/articles/cpqn22erd10o

The Smartphone Dilemma for parents and how to solve it. 10 minutes of essential viewing for any parents. A #smartphonefreechildhood is worth fighting for. Big tech does not own our children.

Change continues to be painfully too slow. Much of life is so much better offline for children. A #smartphonefreechildhood isn't too much to ask.

This starts in primary school. The changing nature of working as a primary school teacher for almost 25 years, the last 12 as an online safety
lead, has led me to the conclusion that a #smartphonefreechildhood is so much healthier and positive. Adults can't cope with the influence of addictive algorithms so young impressionable developing minds don't stand a chance. https://www.theguardian.com/education/2025/apr/19/teachers-warn-rise-misogyny-racism-uk-schools -
I've been a primary school online safety lead for over 10 years. If it takes #netflix to make #adolescence for the penny to drop about the benefits of a #smartphonefreechildhood then so be it. A child needs to feel safe in their own bedroom. That means no social media. End of. And it all starts much younger than secondary school. Please read Jonathan Haidt's book and rethink your family's relationship with tech. Or if reading a book is too much effort, start with this 7 minute video. Our kids deserve better. Much better.

It looks like #smartphonefreechildhood has it's first tech billionaire supporter.

When a parent decides to give their teenage child a smartphone (ideally as late as possible IMHO) I am convinced this book should accompany it. As someone that works in child internet safety, I am convinced this book will safe a teenager's life somewhere. Dr Susie Davies' valuable expertise is exactly what teenagers need to read, rather than the rubbish Musk and Zuckerberg will serve them.

In over a decade of being a primary school online safety lead, nothing has become as important as dealing with unfettered unlimited access to a smartphone for young children and the #smartphonefreechildhood movement has got parents talking in a way I have never managed. I really hope this new series (launching 11 December in the UK) has an impact. Taking phones away from children isn't a social experiment, giving them one is, and the results aren't pretty. https://www.channel4.com/programmes/swiped-the-school-that-banned-smartphones

As someone who teaches online safety to 7-11 year olds, I have always gone down the road of promoting good behaviours when using technology, my argument being "no one blames the pen" when someone graffitis a toilet door, so empowering children with the digital citizenship skills they need rather than demonizing a child with a phone. But Jonathan Haidt's compelling evidenced perspectives show that #smartphonefreechildhood is something we should probably all strive for. Anyone else read this?
