Interesting study commissioned by European Commission's DG ENER on smart and bidirectional charging of EVs.
Smart charging is already mature tech and ready for use. It is important to use time-varying energy and network prices, and for TSOs and DSOs to remove barriers to small-scale flexibility.

Impressive real-world numbers of EDF 🇫🇷 (with its smart charging subsidiary DREEV) for charging a fleet of electric waste collection trucks:
10 MWh of charging for 10 trucks, at a cost of minus €129, by collecting otherwise wasted energy and providing grid support

"Dynamic electric vehicle charging incentives induce large shifts in both the timing and location of charging.
Incentives designed to shift charging toward peak solar generation periods result in a 34% increase in midday charging."https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0047272726001325

Interesting: Finnish energy regulator is requiring DSOs to allocate 1% of their budget to market-based flexibility solutions during the 2024–2027 regulatory period. As a result, smart EV charging has expanded from energy market optimisation to include the local grid (with market-based remuneration).

A project by the TSO and major DSO in Baden-Württemberg aims to investigate the flexibility of EVs without smart meters. Participants with an EV and without a smart meter (i.e. 97% of German households) are wanted:

Yesterday, Finnish EV smart charging service Synergi organised a mass 'smart charging' event in Finland, demonstrating 2.5 MW of controllable capacity.

Around one-third of electric cars in Denmark participate in smart charging services of a range of suppliers, which help to balance the energy system by delivering system services to Energinet, the transmission system operator. That's an impressive figure!

"..flexible and dynamic pricing on the public charging network could also help reduce costs for users. By aligning tariffs with periods of lower wholesale electricity prices, these measures can make public charging more affordable and improve the overall cost competitiveness of EVs."

Italy may be the first EU country to impose requirements on private charging points in its transposition of the EU REDIII into national law: newly installed private charging points must be able to communicate with smart meters from June 30 onwards.

"Pod is now scaling its smart charging capabilities across its existing customer base and extending access to rewards beyond early trials and subscribers to its all-inclusive Pod Drive charging service. Available to thousands more #EV drivers across the UK, Pod could pay out well over £1m in rewards by the end of the year."

How do we steer EV charging so that it strengthens, rather than strains, the power grid? One of the clearest answers emerging from global leading practice is the use of smart pricing to guide smart EV charging.
What can China learn from Europe and vice versa? I discuss this with Chi Gao

Consumers benefit from the flexible operation of their EV and heat pump, but system barriers (e.g. the absence of time-varying energy and network prices, aggregator access and smart meters) and the lack of (a range of) attractive retail offerings prevent them from unlocking user and system benefits.

Managed charging of EVs (called 'smart charging' in Europe) could save California $5 - 18 billion on distribution grid upgrades by 2040. Increased electrification (transport, buildings) offsets increased infrastructure costs by -0.2-4.5¢/kWh for all.

The Italian 'CIR' is interesting in that it is driven by an effort to enable #EV charging flexibility for various markets by an operator of the user's choice. It defines standard interfaces with the smart meter and the flex operator. But should it be made compulsory, or incentivised?

🇳🇴 Norwegian #EV drivers in many areas can now earn a 'Ladebonus' for offering flexibility to the energy system, regardless of their energy supplier or contract. With the 'Norgespris' static low price removing incentives for smart home charging, this enables grid-friendly behaviour in a user-friendly way.

Now, 10,000 EV drivers in Finland are contributing to grid stability. The smart charging service Synergi, which already optimises EV charging according to dynamic power prices, now provides FCR support to the national grid using this aggregated fleet.

One point I have been raising is that, even before #V2G, smart-charged EVs can deliver both upward and downward capacity to the grid. This paper examines the Danish (DK2) market using data from Clever, the largest aggregator.
Per #EV yearly revenue: €170–210

Good move by Volvo to make smart charging the standard.
Volvo's smart charging service works directly via the car (retrieving information, controlling charging) and is therefore compatible with any home charging point.

“While the smart charging strategy was not explicitly optimized for grid support, the results indicate substantial potential for grid-aware optimization. Additionally, the study observes that in some cases, EV charging can counteract reverse power flows from renewable generation, suggesting a dual role in both demand flexibility and renewable integration.”
