  2. One of my favourite things about travelling through small inland Australian towns: the historical museums. Which are often just "we had some rusting machinery so we put a fence around it." Free entry, obviously.

  3. Here. I'm from here.

Small town conversations eventually include the question "Where are you from?"

I awkwardly launch into my outline of what brought us here and when but it always sounds like an excuse.

Mrs Miasma whispers in my ear "Just say we're from here."

Six years with lots of practice and I still can't say it right.

  4. Hype for the Future 108D → Modern Suburban Developments in Smaller Communities

Introduction Though suburban sprawl often dominates in the modern outskirts of major and even minor cities, smaller communities, often of fewer than twenty-five thousand (25,000) residents, may have a more comprehensive sidewalk or related infrastructural network, even in the suburban zones. Within such suburban zones, however, the sidewalk network is often identified in the abstract as substandard, as with the sidewalk networks along major highways in modern suburban […]

  7. Fun small-town activity #4.

Getting up at 3:00 am to make sure the mother-in-law makes the 5:05 flight out to Denver. And of course it's raining outside.

Were I back in the big city, I'd be taking Mrs Miasma for a questionable breakfast at Denny's after, but the only place with a light on right now is the Sheriff's office.

    "Pancakes" is our safe word.

  10. Planning lessons harvested from the Kansas prairie

Just some cultivated planning thoughts from our multiple trips to and through the Sunflower State. These lessons are not provided in order of importance. Peace!

    Source: fity.club
    • The beauty of a prairie is subtle. It’s not sharply defined by mountain peak nor a rugged coastline. Instead, it is shaped by the elegant blossom of a sunflower, by the rich amber fields of of wheat waving in the breeze, by a towering thunderhead in the distance, by an old barn set against a blue horizon, by a solitary meadowlark singing on a fencepost, or by countless other features that both depict and define the Great Plains.
    • Reuse or re-adaptation of grain elevators and silos as murals, event venues, and climbing towers are excellent community placemaking options.
    • What lies beneath the earth can be just as important, if not more important than what is situated at the surface. The Ogallala Aquifer and post rock limestone are just two examples.
    Source: en.wikipedia.org
    • In the same vein, the hidden human talent lying just beneath the surface in Small Town America is an underutilized resource that more communities need to learn how to tap.
    • Lawrence, Kansas is one of those special college towns that exudes eclectic fun, energy, electricity, and a cultural vibrancy that radiates throughout the community. If that could only be bottled…

    • Some of the most interesting and rewarding places to visit while traveling are away from the interstate. Taking extra time to explore off the beaten path provides many useful and unexpected insights for a community planner. You never quite know when you will stumble on the next great idea, but it sure won’t be from the freeway.
    • Placemaking takes just a seed of an idea, which when planted, watered, and cared for, yields a bountiful harvest. Often communities tend to overthink it by being grandiose. Meanwhile, the best initial ideas come from the low-hanging fruit. In Wilson, Kansas it was their Czech heritage, while in Wamego, it was adopting a Wizard of Oz theme for the town.
    • For when you do need to be on a highway, every other toll road in the United States needs to take lessons from the Kansas Turnpike. It is by far the best run and maintained highway in the country.
    Source: northeastnews.net
    • Kansas, like other states in the Heartland is often dissed as boring by those from elsewhere. Every state (and every place) has a story to tell and lessons to teach. It’s just a matter of taking the time to learn the insights.

  11. A scenic excursion through Iowa’s Loess Hills

Tranquil serenity as seen from the hill town of Castana, Iowa

Winding up and winding down through farmlands, villages and small towns. The 220 mile long Loess Hills National Scenic Byway is pleasant road trip along the western ridges of Iowa between Sioux City and the Missouri border.

    Windmill of time

One of a few places on the planet where Loess Hill geography occurs, this scenic corridor is a trip through time, both geological and historical. The photos accompanying this text are just a few of those taken while traversing this lovely byway last week.

“Formed by deposits of very fin, windblown soil at the end of the last ice ages, there are not your average hills.”

    Source: https://www.visitloesshills.org

With so many sites and vistas along the byway, it would take multiple days or trips to visit them all. In the half-day we spent there, we hardly scratched the surface. There are a number of loop road and side-trip options that can take the adventuresome beyond the byway’s two-lanes of pavement into adjoining/nearby parklands, forests, grasslands, and other natural areas.

So, if you are tired interstate highways, high speeds, and heavy traffic, consider a dose of Iowa tranquility and grace along the serene Loess Hills National Scenic Byway. Additional images from our excursion are provided below. Peace!

  12. BBC: ‘I can’t drink the water’ – life next to a US data centre. “She believes the construction of the centre, which is owned by Meta (the parent company of Facebook), disrupted her private well, causing an excessive build-up of sediment. Ms Morris now hauls water in buckets to flush her toilet. She says she had to fix the plumbing in her kitchen to restore water pressure. But the water that […]

  13. One of the best things about living in a small town: the lady at the post office had her dog with her today so I was able to boop her and love on her while I was picking up my mail.

  15. Catching your death.

Every year the Friday right after Thanksgiving they close Main street to car traffic and have music, food and all the stores stay open. It's called "The Christmas Stroll" and Santa and Mrs Claus ride up and down the street in a fire engine (He even waved to me this year).

We have art sculptures on every block downtown and I was happy to see that we also have somebody with a sense of humor.

  17. @PhoenixSerenity @chris And rural businesses & families are paying the (short term) cost. A real rural strategy will be a long-term thing. Who can afford that? Not small businesses. Not families. Not rural & small town local govts. Not provincial govts on a 3-5 year election cycle. And the sowers of discontent (fascists & fellow-travellers) reap the whirlwind (and esp their funders & cronies). 2/2

  20. I read an article printed a little while ago in the newspaper of the town where I was born and raised (and got the hell out) - lamenting that the kids are moving away, and how to stop it.
Don't be bigoted and hateful? Offer livable wages? Stop sneering at everything that didn't exist when your grandpa was a kid?
    Just some ideas.
