Smallmouth bass is one of my favorite fish species, next to trout. It is also a very tasty fish - sorry, one of the reasons I fish is to eat - I am a pescatarian, although I rarely catch smallmouth at the legal size from my usual creeks 😉
This one, about 11 inches, a little under legal size, was set free.

A juvenile Smallmouth bass
 
As I was trying to catch trout for my dinner from a put-and-take fishery, I got this fish. This fish was so pretty, I took a quick video, sorry…
 
About 5 inches, hatched probably in spring 2022, a little more than a year old.

Smallmouth bass, both fries and adults, are vulnerable in Spring as adults take care of fries. In PA, it is prohibited to take Smallmouth bass in April to mid-June.

Made it to the Little Tennessee River in NC this afternoon. Thought I was fishing for trout, but I guess the water is too warm. As usual, I photographed the first, but the subsequent fish were larger.
