In support of #PrivacyAwarenessWeek2026, OAIC, and #SmallBusinessWeek, our COO Bek Fraser reflects on her years running a consultancy.
"My clients trusted me with deeply sensitive information. I went with a mainstream provider because I didn't know what I didn't know."
The right email infrastructure shouldn't be a quick decision. It's central to the trust your clients place in you.

Bonus #ProTip: It’s about *value*, not time spent.
I don’t care if a plumber takes 10 minutes or 4 hours to fix my leaky faucet. I care that it gets done. Same for well-cleaned windows, a tightly-edited script, or a beautifully-printed booklet. Consider the value you bring to your clients, not how long it takes. Outline specific scopes and schedules of work, & charge for the final outcome. That way you know what you’re getting paid, & the client knows their budget.

Another #ProTip: know your worth!
Esp. when you are a freshly-minted business-owner, it can be hard to know what to charge. It is worth the time to see what others in your business, area, & other specific areas of differentiation charge. A LOT of people just starting out undervalue their worth — especially women. Don’t let the pressure to make a sale cheapen your value. Relatedly: try not to differentiate strictly on price. It’s a volume game, & that can rob your time.

Another tip:
Leave your work at work. Even if you’re working from home (or in my case, from a backyard shed) have a method of separating your work-life from the rest of your life. You are not your work. Your worth isn’t defined by how you make a buck. One thing I do to help with this separation is at the end of the workday I make a list of what to do tomorrow. Then I forget about it until I next walk through the office door. Liberating!

It’s #SmallBusinessWeek and I have been running my little small-business design shop full-time for 23 years now. Wow! To celebrate, here are some tips, I guess:
Do something you take satisfaction in. This is true for any work, but if you’re running your own show there will be times when you ask “is it worth all the headaches?” If you get a little glow of pride in your heart when you complete a project/make a thing/help someone, *that* is what makes it worth it.

Happy National #smallbusinessweek ! 🥳
At Ketchbrook Analytics, we are incredibly proud of the work that we have accomplished as a small team that focuses on solving the #datascience problems we are best at.
As you are out and about this weekend (or choosing a collaborator for your next #data or #analytics project💡) please consider supporting "small".
In the meantime, listen to the story of Olivia Adams and how her inspiring story mirrors our mission at Ketchbrook.
