  1. A quotation from Molly Ivins

Me, I think government is a tool, like a hammer. You can use a hammer to build with or you can use a hammer to destroy with. Whether government is good or bad depends on what you use it for and how well you use it. On the whole, it’s a poor idea to put people in charge of government who don’t believe in using it.

Molly Ivins (1944-2007) American writer, political columnist [Mary Tyler Ivins]
Essay (1992-03-01), “Good morning, Fort Worth! Glad to be here,” Fort Worth Star-Telegram

  2. A quotation from Lincoln

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves — in their separate, and individual capacities. In all that the people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere.
The desirable things which the individuals of a people can not do, or can not well do, for themselves, fall into two classes: those which have relation to wrongs, and those which have not. Each of these branch off into an infinite variety of subdivisions. The first — that in relation to wrongs — embraces all crimes, misdemeanors, and non-performance of contracts. The other embraces all which, in its nature, and without wrong, requires combined action, as public roads and highways, public schools, charities, pauperism, orphanage, estates of the deceased, and the machinery of government itself.
From this it appears that if all men were just, there still would be some, though not so much, need of government.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) American lawyer, politician, US President (1861-65)
    Speech (1854-07-01?), fragment on government

"It also champions #SmallGovernment a la #Libertarian ideology (aka. Fuck you, I’m alright Jack).

Hardly a fair or accurate depiction of libertarianism, but I'm not surprised.

People on this platform who are honest about libertarianism are rarer than hen's teeth. People who misrepresent it? A dime a dozen.

  4. Every “right” you gain comes at the cost of a “liberty” you lose. Where’s the sweet spot that maximises well-being? And what can this tell us about the myth of "Small" government? #Politics #Government #PoliticalPhilosophy #Tariffs #Tax #Policy #BigGovernment #SmallGovernment #Trump

  5. A MAGA Trump supporter was left speechless after we dispelled small government big corporation crap.

A MAGA Trump supporter called to dispute our support for a government big enough that no corporation could attain supremacy. He was left speechless and decided to reevaluate his position.

  6. Saw a #MikeJohnson quote in #theGuardian basically admitting that he likes what #ElonMusk is doing because it's what they've "been unable to do" in congress for years.

So in other words, he's able to act unilaterally against ideological enemies which ofc is harder with a legislative body of hundreds of different voices.

    @IndyMediaAus
This article is just bloody brilliant.

It quickly looks at the successes by #BigGovernment in #Australia in responding to #Covid and areas of failures too.

And rips the Health Department, #TGA and #ATAGI a new ones for failure to get vaccination happening quickly.

If you're sick of hearing no-nothings yabba about how the lockdowns were unnecessary then this article gives comparisons with other countries.

  8. Walz has it right. The GOP talks about small, limited government but espouses the opposite when it comes to bedrooms, exam rooms, libraries and the decisions they want you to make.

The Liberal Party has taken its‘Not my Job.‘ philosophy a bit too seriously this time.

Funny how the party of "small government" became the party of "ban everything that makes us even slightly butthurt".

I think there's a correlation here with the Tories in the UK. Dog whistles, culture war and no policies
