  1. Dusk over Ponte de Lima: the bridge lights up, the river becomes a mirror, and the town breathes calm and history. A promise of slow living, green wine, and evenings by the water. #PonteDeLima #Portugal #Minho #Travel #Sunset #VisitPortugal #Journey #photography #SlowTourism #RoadTrip #Go

  3. Our sea has such a profound influence on our connection to our Island of Rubha Phoil on Skye.
    .
    • We share our sea with whales, dolphins, seals, otters and dozens and dozens of beautiful species of birds
    • The wildlife under the surface of the sea too is super rich.

Our sea is among some of the main things we love and depend on as an Island culture.

Now imagine there was huge volumes of traffic being shipped in and out through these waters.

    • Ecosystems will be disrupted
    • Wildlife would decrease
    • Pollution would increase

The things that make our Island such an attractive location are the very things that will be destroyed as a result.

We need to come together and create a network.

A network that can create a more sustainable model where…
    • Culture
    • Heritage
    • Community
    • Wildlife
are all at the forefront of our tourism industry

‌Join our the network. Connect with us.

  8. Can you imagine changing the ferry in this view for a 2000 passenger cruise ship?

Well this is planned for Armadale ferry on Skye!

But what does this mean for our communities and ecosystems?
    • More tourists shipped in and out just for a quick selfie
    • More air pollution, noise pollution & sea pollution
    • More demand for short term lets

    And this leads to…
    • Less interest in the culture of our island
    • Less balance in our ecosystems
    • Higher property prices, working age people priced out of our community!

And this is just scratching the surface!

    Yes we want tourism!

Its one of the biggest opportunities we have as an Island economy in such a beautiful location.

    But at what cost?
    • The cost of our communities?
    • The cost of our ecosystems?
    • The cost of our culture?

These are the very things that make our island so desirable in the first place!

To not put our communities, ecosystems, and culture first, we risk loosing it all.

Lest restructure how tourism works on the Island!

  13. Knowledge of the history of the land is important!

Rubha Phoil has been inhabited by people, likely, for many thousands of year. We can see traces they left behind the landscape.

We can learn so much from them. How they harvested water, how much fitter they were than modern humans, where they build their shelters, how much they were connected with the sea...

We also need to be aware that due to the history of Rubha Phoil, the Rock belongs to the community.

That is why the ownership structure is slowly changing.

If you want to be part owner of Rubha Phoil, you can register on our Virtual Village and help us transfer ownership to you

  17. We received a nice message from a young woman that came to stay with us for a month during her travels around Europe.
    It warmed our hearts!
” I wanted to thank you once more for opening Rubha Phoil to me and letting partake in the magic. A few months later and I still think that, that was my most transformative place (on my travels). I would love to hear from you!
    Greetings from Portugal this time.”

  21. Nature is its own recycling centre

    Our Ecosystems work in cycles

A big part of connecting with nature is being able to tap into these cycles.

To work with the cycles of nature...

    Not against them.

So we have installed a hydroponic system in the polytunnel.

Using plants, bacteria and clay pebbles as a natural filtration system, our garden produces fish and vegetables on autopilot. No more need to farm fish or salmon in the sea. It can be done on land without causing pollution.

It's funny how nature seems to provide the best solutions. How adding simple technology in harmony with nature, can add so much value for humans too.
