  1. @itwasntme223 you could add the tag #antiAI

  4. Ever waste your energy trying to decide what to do?

Something I've been trialling with creative pursuits is having a focus for each day. Wednesday and Saturday I sew, Thursday and Sunday I practice drawing, and Tuesday and Friday I tackle complex knits. (Monday is my day of rest, and every day is a day for general knitting.)

Due to fatigue, I may only manage 30 minutes, or 10, or none at all, but at least my limited energy doesn't all go on dithering about what project to tackle today.

I'm finding the strategy very helpful, and look forward to using it in my writing work (drafting a new book, recording & editing audiobooks, formatting ebooks...) when health permits.

I got the idea from Slow Productivity by Cal Newport - a book well worth a read, even if (like me) you have to wait half a year in a library queue.

  5. Interesting post about how to think differently about RSS. I know that for me, if I am not reading my RSS feed daily, it can be overwhelming.

  6. I had seen a few quotes and comments here about this book on 'Slow Productivity' by Cal Newport. So I bought it, I've read it, and I recommend it to other academics.

If the title sounds off-putting don't worry, this is a book of useful strategies to find quality time in any 'creative industry' job.

Turns out I'd been using the strategies throughout my career. It was great to read about why they have worked for me.

  7. I'm still a work in progress when it comes to rewiring my brain about what being productive actually means. Today, for instance, I feel extremely productive for having ticked off all the items on my to-do list. But I should've also felt productive yesterday when I decided to take things slow and take a breather from Monday's back-to-back meetings. After all, getting proper rest is crucial to minimizing stress.

  8. Disappointed by Cal Newport's "Slow Productivity":

Sarah Lang takes a deep dive into Newport's latest release, which #productivity buffs will recognize as a "greatest hits" of his other books 👇

  9. Slow is a quality, not primarily a speed. Even IT pundits are finally getting the message:
"We urgently need to consider how we might make all of our key IT infrastructure “slow”."

  10. @annaecook On that note, I’m looking forward to reading #CalNewport’s “#SlowProductivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout”, which should be available in March.

  11. We all know this and have since the beginning of email in the workplace, but this interview really helps explain why "The Digital Workplace is [Still] Designed to Bring You Down".

"My theory is that technology made things just easy enough so we can put more on people’s plates, and we didn’t factor in how much that would pull out of their time."
