Ah, another day, another "revolutionary" mesh network. 🤦♂️ Reticulum promises to make everyone a sovereign network overlord with hardware you can find at your local #junkyard. 🌐 But don't worry, it'll still work with the speed of a snail on dial-up. 🐌💨

Evening light on stone and salt.
The beacon wakes, the sea keeps breathing, and for a moment the internet behaves itself.
Quiet tech. Steady light.

Hi, I’m Diana! Researcher & writer working on self-regulation, practice, and how technology quietly messes with attention.
Currently PhD-shaped.Interested in media interaction, learning processes, music practice, and queer life without the algorithmic panic.
Mostly here to interact with people.
Expect mostly replies to stuff and the odd rant about niche topics. Light on hot takes; heavy on “hm, that’s interesting."

There's a solar-powered webserver and small web design workshop happening in Guelph! So awesome!
https://edvideo.org/blog/workshop/how-to-build-a-solar-powered-web-server/
"In their ongoing research and creative practice, Clendinning draws from media artist Carrie Hott’s Slow Internet ethos and the energy-responsive design strategies developed by the Solar Protocol Network, to advocate for web design that prioritizes the use of limited colours, fonts and lower resolution images."

My Gaymers+ #Webring got SOME attention on here, and is taking off on Tumblr (I literally paid to Boost it 🔥)… but no one has contacted me about joining, yet.
This took way too much time and effort for me to just… quietly delete it, in a few weeks' time.

Following on from yesterday's post, we thought we'd share this from @thecreativeindependent.com 🐌
"...in the midst of the state of things, it’s nice to remind ourselves of the slow and quiet corners hiding in the folds of the net—like the Wilson Towercam—and to hope that we might continue to build them."

Downloading "Split Fiction" through the EA App made me face the issue of slow downloads once again. Now I figured it out and the download speeds are much better!

We need a project like #Gemini (the protocol, not the dystopian massively-parallel-value-extractor) to establish protocols and services that work well at 128kbps.
That would be crazy cool.
We have #Gemini, we have the #SmolWeb, now we need #SlowInternet (on purpose).
Background: about half a decade ago, I purchased a pre-paid SIM with unlimited "2G"-speed internet connectivity.
I thought 128kbps would be more than enough for my needs.
Nope. Almost entirely unusable. Stuff would just fail gracelessly left and right, even though it was slowly-but-steadily getting the job done.
I had paid for a year in advance X'D

Looking at downloading MacOS 15 (Sequoia) - quite an upgrade from my MacOS 12 (Monterey). And boggling at just how many hours it would have taken to download the nearly 15GB update file on our home broadband before we upgraded to part fibre recently, and downloads increased tenfold ... #Broadband #ADSL #Fibre #PartFibre #Mac #MacOS #MacOS15 #MacOSSequoia #Sequoia #slowInternet #HomeInternet #HomeBroadband #slowBroadband

Ha! Fortune reads:
“Before you marry a person, you should make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are.”
Babe, my first modem was 300 baud. Then 1200, 2400, 2400 MNP5, 9600, 14.4k v.32bis, Telebit Trailblazer 19.2k, 28.8k, 56k…
I’ve see it all. Come at me.

Offroader is an Android app that uploads media files to Wikipedia's media archive even if (for example in a catastrophic area) only a very slow and shaky internet connection is available and can also resume a broken upload over another connection or with another device and with minimal data usage.

fwiw....
I was having #SlowInternet issues, and narrowed it down to some issue with a #BluetoothMouse, but was stuck with 6mbps speeds instead of my usual 80-120ish rates. On a hunch and brief reference to something I didn't quite understand on a tech site, I logged my laptop into that mysterious "5G" channel my wifi offers (as opposed to its default 2.4g channel) - channel's probably not even the right word, but ANYway...
Speeds now jumped to 120 mbps or better.
Lesson learned!

@Aranjedeath I almost always browse with uBlock set to halt loading of any media larger than 1024KB and it's amazing (in a bad way) how much crap is bigger than a MB when it has *absolutely no reason* to be. Avatars, icons, mostly-transparent header images, etc. All sorts of junk. It's a disease.
And in the wild world of mobile apps, you typically don't even have that much control over what's being pulled down and why.
Maybe we could start some sort of Razzies-style anti-award for the worst, most flagrant misuse of users' bandwidth? Start naming and shaming sites, apps, and developers for their terrible behavior. Maybe staying off the Shit List would be a little bit of a motivator to scale those images, reconsider that font, think hard about that "cool" JS library, test that app on a 56kb simulator, etc.

It seems like the people responding to this poll (so far) skew towards those who experienced the Internet in the 1990s and earlier.
Which might suggest there are a lot of people on the #Fediverse that not only remember the #oldInternet , but might want to support, bring back, and re-create & restore the best parts of the "old Internet".

@ruchowdh @KLdivergence welcome, it is great to see you here! 😊
Fediverse can feel a bit disconcerting at first, but you are not alone! Timeline is just reverse chron (no Al… yet 😜). Depending on the client you might see only or mostly users from your instance, so tailoring your network might take a bit.
The pace is a bit different too, no wonder why many slow Internet fans can be found around here (great #slowinternet fan here, ask me about Gemini and Gopher if you are interested 🙃)
