Mapping Sleeping Bees within Their Nest: Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Worker Honey Bee Sleep

“Bees are not only very important for all ecosystems... They are very cute too....
However, bee societies are very complex and different sleep patterns exist for the other kinds of bees in the hierarchy..
In general, bees actually sleep, and many species spend around 5-8 hours resting each day, usually at night when they're not foraging.
Some solitary bees have been photographed sleeping inside flowers, where they cling onto the petals or stamens with their tiny legs and sometimes even their jaws.
One of the cutest parts is that tired bees can look almost like they've fallen asleep at work, curled up inside a flower with pollen still covering their bodies…”

“Patterns of behavior within societies have long been visualized and interpreted using maps. Mapping the occurrence of sleep across individuals within a society could offer clues as to functional aspects of sleep. In spite of this, a detailed spatial analysis of sleep has never been conducted on an invertebrate society. [The authors] introduce the concept of mapping sleep across an insect society, and provide an empirical example, mapping sleep patterns within colonies of European honey bees (Apis mellifera L.). Honey bees face variables such as temperature and position of resources within their colony's nest that may impact their sleep. [They] mapped sleep behavior and temperature of worker bees and produced maps of their nest's comb contents as the colony grew and contents changed. By following marked bees, [they] discovered that individuals slept in many locations, but bees of different worker castes slept in different areas of the nest relative to position of the brood and surrounding temperature. Older worker bees generally slept outside cells, closer to the perimeter of the nest, in colder regions, and away from uncapped brood. Younger worker bees generally slept inside cells and closer to the center of the nest, and spent more time asleep than awake when surrounded by uncapped brood. The average surface temperature of sleeping foragers was lower than the surface temperature of their surroundings, offering a possible indicator of sleep for this caste. [They] propose mechanisms that could generate caste-dependent sleep patterns and discuss functional significance of these patterns…”

☀️🌙 Oh, the audacity! Did you know your sacred, uninterrupted 8-hour slumber is a modern-day con-job? 😂 Apparently, ancient societies snoozed in polyphasic harmony with the Sun, unlike today's caffeine-addicted, 9-to-5 zombies. Wake up, sheeple! ⏰😴

Do you use a fan to sleep? Here’s what to know. – The Washington Post
Do you use a fan to sleep? Here’s what to know.
The cool breeze and steady hum from a bedroom fan may help some people sleep better, according to science.
July 16, 2025, 4 min
The science
Fans may help you sleep better for a couple of reasons: They can provide a cooling breeze and soothing white noise, sleep experts said. It is not, however, a one-size-fits-all approach as its success can depend on various factors, including how hot it is, the type of fan and whether a person has certain health conditions.
While fans cannot lower the temperature in a room, they can create a breeze that can help cool you.
As the Energy Department points out, fans “cool people, not rooms” through the wind chill effect, in which wind displaces warmer air and helps evaporate sweat from the skin, making people feel cooler. This may be especially helpful for people who run hot at night, including those who are going through menopause or taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Editor’s Note: I do use a fan to sleep 🙂 …

After nearly 10 hours of sleep & dozing I expected to be feeling like I had some energy to do something but apparently that's not how today is going.
Made the mistake of trying to fix pCloud on my Linux. After about an hour of random bouts of thinking, uninstalling, downloading, searching menus, more uninstalling & downloading, etc. I think I've fixed it. Won't know until tomorrow when I start my computer again (I switch it of when I switch off for the day).
So, no productive morning. Will try & get myself to bed early again as I'm clearly in need of some extra sleep.
It's already time to think about prepping lunch so should probably do that so I can have an afternoon available for doing things.

Two nights ago I got about 5.75 hours of sleep. I felt fine all day long until I finally got home from work. That was about 6:30pm. As soon as I walked in the door it hit me and I just felt completely exhausted.
Last night I got about 6.5 hours of sleep. I have felt completely exhausted all day.
Do you ever wish that things like sleep could actually start making sense? Wouldn’t that be nice?
I haven’t used my CPAP machine since before we went to Florida. I packed it and took it with us, but I never set it up. I had a bad cold when I got home and didn’t want to be inhaling phlegm all night so I didn’t set it up at home either. Maybe I’ll finally get back to it tonight. I’m pretty sure I don’t need it anymore, but maybe there’s some kind of placebo affect I could take advantage of? Probably not, but who knows.
All I know for sure is that I could use a nap right now.

Sleep irregularity and dementia risk
Researchers have uncovered a surprising link between #sleepregularity and the risk of developing #dementia. Their findings, published in Neurology, suggest that both very irregular and, to a lesser extent, overly consistent #sleeppatterns are associated with an increased risk of dementia.

My weird #SleepPatterns continue.
Today I rolled with it: when I couldn't fall back asleep at 5am, I got up and wrote most of two scenes. When I crashed later this morning, I took a 2 hour nap. Afterwards I finished the 2nd scene and tackled the growing errand backlog.
My most productive day in a while. I feel pretty good too.

Do mobile apps have a role to play in promoting a good night's sleep? While some take the 'screen-free bedroom' approach, many are turning to mobile apps that use #tech and #AI to support healthy sleeping habits.
"The burgeoning sleep technology market includes devices to track our slumber patterns, apps providing restful mediation, as well as services to manage medical disorders like sleep apnea or narcolepsy."
