Had a week off of #vacation (well, #staycation) and my life has been so stressful, I pretty much did nothing, and it feels like the most I can do. One more rest day Monday. Back in the melee Tuesday with a lot coming due at work. Will try to borrow the telescope (friend will loan me a 12 inch dob) and do some observing at least one night this week... #astronomy is a hobby where I just need to show up, and there is understanding and camaraderie and nerdy parallel play, and all I have to do is stare at the sky. Grateful I am able to participate this, it's been a challenge treating #SleepApnea and #sleep maintenance issues. #neurodivergent

I suppose a good night's sleep before going back to work would have been lovely. But here we are... #vividdreams #sleepapnea

I can’t believe the difference that sleeping has had on my life. I’ve been seeing a sleep apnea doctor since February. I’m averaging about 7hrs of sleep at night now. Here’s some of the issues that have cleared up since using the CPAP;
A. GERD. I had it so bad that a few times I thought I was having a heart attack. Now I get hard burn if I eat something spicy which is fair;
B. Heart Palpitations. My GP has been testing me for heart problems. They are now completely gone;
C. Numb Hands. Some days it would take close to an hour for me to get feeling back in my hands. Haven’t had any issues unless I sleep without the CPAP;
D. Energy. This is a big one. I finally feel like I can do things without pushing through exhaustion. I haven’t felt exhausted in months.
Anyways, all this to say that sleep is VERY important and don’t let your doctor tell you otherwise!!

104/365 Sleep apnea causes low oxygen levels. For some people, it triggers release of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), a hormone that flushes water & sodium from your body.
My previous pulmonologist was so bad I went off CPAP for 2 years. Found a great pulmonologist & can confirm ANP connection. Nighttime urination went from 3-5 to 1-2 times over 8-9 hours of sleep. Once/twice a week I sleep through the night.

I got diagnosed with #SleepApnea and am appalled to find the prices of #CPAP machines which are essentially life saving. From a reductionist perspective it is just an air blower. Smh.

That sleep wasn't great. I'm over at the in-laws for...reasons. My #sleepapnea mask strap snapped at the velcro end just as I was drifting off. This was not helpful. Fixed it with sellotape, swearing outrageously as I did so. Fell asleep... Strap slipped out of the sellotape. I grabbed more sellotape to fix it again... You guessed it... Swearing outrageously again...
Really sets you up for the (long) day ahead!

🎵🎶 Ah, the didgeridoo: an ancient wind instrument and now, apparently, a cure for sleep apnea! Because when it comes to medical breakthroughs, who needs CPAP machines when you can just blow a giant horn? 🎺😴

I definitely slept for 5 hours tonight. It wasn't enough. #sleepapnea

Last night, I cranked the humidity on my #cpap up to 6... and holy shit, that was too much. Apparently, it caused my mask to probably "rainout" (new term, yay!). Another day of waking up tired even after using CPAP.
... It also didn't help that I stayed up until 1am preparing a legal demand letter to get my husband to submit VFSRAC for insurance coverage with Canada Life. #sleepapnea

Holy CRAP. I slept through. I actually slept through. On the hottest night of the year with a ventilator. How the HELL did I accomplish that? No idea, but it was bloody lovely! #confused #sleepapnea

I saw an obnoxiously scammy ad for a D**ila E**o #SleepApnea pillow. So to spite them, I immediately ordered an exact knock-off from AliExpress for 1/4 of their "discounted" price.
So, did the #Ad work or not?

I think we can all agree that sleep is important. But messed-up sleep, where one stops breathing (sleep apnea), is kind of bad and (atop everything else) can also cause memory impairments.

Was doing so well with the old #sleepapnea tonight. Only woke once at 3.30am, comfort break, swig of water, back to sleep... Lay there for 15 minutes trying to get comfortable...the effort of which woke me up properly, so I'm now downstairs with the dog on my lap feeling vaguely pissed off.
Ho hum.
I know other people have bigger problems, but I do object and feel depressed about not sleeping through the night for...yikes...15 years. Can't be good for me!

Sleep apnea episodes up to well over 10 an hour over the last few days. This is not good as I'm supposed to be at 5 or less. I've been averaging 3. I'm not sure what's going on, but it ain't good. Hoping to not pop my clogs during the night. Might not be found for a month of Sundays... #sleepApnea #SleepApnoea

I am SO TIRED of not sleeping through the night. :-( #sleepapnea

Oof. Nearly 30 sleep apnea events per hour last night. My sleep was highly disrupted. Not sure what happened (mask seal was great) but that was painful. Hoping that was a one off and not some fundamental change.
-
Potentially good news for sleep apnea sufferers from the field of medicine. Participants in a clinical drug trial who took the highest daily dose of an epilepsy drug had nearly 50 percent fewer breathing interruptions while sleeping. @ScienceAlert has more:

Great representation for #sleepapnea sufferers on #BBCBreakfast this morning from Duncan Wood (The Masked Anchorman) who was recently diagnosed with the issue and has started a YouTube channel about his struggles with daytime sleepiness, diagnosis and treatment.
https://youtube.com/@maskedanchorman?si=DRHFV22TCwVx6ymrDo you snore and fall asleep during the day? It's worth getting checked out, as I did many years ago.

Interesting! If I sleep on my LEFT hand side (recommendation from my knowledgeable wife), I get no burps or acid indigestion. Something to do with how the oesophagus meets the stomach. Also trying new mask rather than the old one. #sleepapnea Feel slightly... disoriented at the moment. Could just be dehydration.

My #sleepapnea travails continue tonight. I feel like I'm somehow back at the beginning 20 years ago. Nervous about going to sleep. :-(

This picture has so much stupid in it, I can't begin to tell you. But I'll have a go. #sleepapnea 1. Bad sleep hygiene using a device before sleeping. 2. Using your mask while fully awake is just stupid. 3. Implies happy co-sleeping habits between man and wife with a CPAP. (Ask me why this is huge and complete bullshit...I dare you :-/ )

I haven’t slept well for 26 yrs. I’ve seen every doctor known to man except a witch doctor (couldn’t find one) about it. Anyways, 11 yrs ago I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea. The doctor I saw seemed to only want to sell cpac machines and didn’t help me. Fast forward to today and last night I slept for 7 hrs on a cpac. Is this what people feel like every day? Refreshed and full of energy? I haven’t felt like this in a lot of years. On a related note the lady who set me up with the machine told me that not too long ago it was believed women couldn’t get sleep apnea only men. Ugh.

In reference to the post from earlier today where I discussed my silly food experiment, I have finished my lunch. I had a little bit of chicken, a protein cookie, a little sugar free chocolate, and a handful of Ritz crackers. No peanuts for me.
Now we wait and see how I feel this afternoon including if my stomach requires me to eat on the drive home, and how I feel when it’s time for dinner, probably around 6:45-7:00pm. Will there be gassy pain in my stomach like there often is when I work in the office and have peanuts with my lunch? Or will I be pain and discomfort (and brutal, violent farts) free (please excuse the TMI, but I included it for the benefit of scientific research, you understand)?
In other health-ish news, I used my CPAP machine again last night. It went well. No issues. More importantly, the SleepWatch app on my Apple Watch tells me that the ratio of restful sleep vs light sleep increased. Yesterday it was 67% restful, which wasn’t bad, I don’t think, but today it was 79% which is pretty wonderful. I like seeing that number in the 70’s, but when it pushes 80 it’s extra special. It had my sleeping heart rate dip at 21% too. Anything above 20% is excellent. Unfortunately, I failed to get six hours of sleep in total (only by a few minutes though) and the older I get the less functional I am when the total is less than six hours. Oh well.
So as far as medical experiments go, we need to see how my stomach feels by the time dinner rolls around, 4-5 hours from now, and how tonight’s sleep goes. There is just so much data to collect. The statistics nerd typing this post is giddy with antici…

Did you know sleep apnea symptoms can be very different in women? Sleep apnea is deadly and women often do not present the traditional symptom of snoring.
The top symptoms of sleep apnea in women include:
* Anxiety
* Daytime sleepiness
* Depression
* Headaches, especially in the morning
* Insomnia
* Tiredness
* Waking often during sleepNote that snoring does not appear in that list.
If you have these symptoms, request a sleep study! Sleep apnea increases the risk of heart failure by 140%, the risk of stroke by 60%, and the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%.
