  1. “Nobody believes that #Canada or #Europe are worse at policing #global #slavelabor than the #U.S. is. In fact, nobody believes that the #Trump administration even cares about slave labor.”

  2. "Prisoners in Minnesota are earning less than a dollar an hour making products for Disney. That’s according to organizers and former inmates who gathered at a press conference in December to share what they’ve learned — or experienced firsthand — about the exploitative prison labor system in Minnesota.

Organizers with the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee called the press conference last month to update the public about their campaign to end what they call prison slavery.

The Minnesota constitution allows for exactly that – slavery as part of a punishment for a crime. Under article one, section two of the state’s constitution, involuntary servitude is barred unless someone has been convicted of a crime. Under the statute, prisoners can be subjected to unpaid and grossly underpaid work.

Through a subcontractor, Anagram International LLC, Disney has taken advantage of this law to extract nearly-free labor from the state’s inmates, paying them $0.90 an hour to fold large Mylar balloons, according to organizers of the event and two inmates who shared their firsthand experience."

  7. Hype for the Future 15C: Anticapitalist and Degrowth Proofs

While capitalism may not be morally equivalent to human slavery and slave labor, numerous fundamental similarities exist. Even though society has supposedly advanced beyond legally enforced racism, sexism, and even ableism, capitalism continues to promote all three of the discriminatory practices. novaTopFlex believes that capitalism is fundamentally a crisis and essentially the equivalent of human slavery and slave labor, even without the moral connotations. 12. "Trump has called the idea 'owner responsibility.'

'[T]hey’re going to be largely responsible for these people,' Trump said. This echoes the system legislators set up in the U.S. South during Reconstruction thanks to the fact the Thirteenth Amendment permits enslavement 'as punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.'”

  13. "Comparing the detention camps to similar programs in other countries, [Timothy] Snyder warns that incarcerated workers will likely be offered to employers on special terms, a concept Trump appears to have embraced with his suggestion that the administration will figure out how to put workers back in the fields and businesses by putting them under the authority of those hiring them."

  14. CEOs should now, this summer, this month, next week, sign a pledge not to use labor from concentration camps. It could be as simple as that: "On behalf of my firm I promise not to use labor from concentration camps nor to cooperate with any firm that does." - Timothy Snyder

  16. "The British used parts of North America as a penal colony. Convicts were transported by private companies and sold by auction to plantation owners. Between 1718 and 1776, it is estimated that 30,000-50,000 convicts were transported for penal labor to at least nine of the continental colonies." -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_la
This practice of enslaving convicts is still quite popular in the US.

Wikipedia is good fun. The history stories...often not.

  18. @AutisticInnovator it hits different when you are directly affected by it. I think the #tradewar is great as it lowers the slave labor used in production (Chinese labor camps for #uighur and #FalunGong) while all the negative impact of the trade war is affecting only some country far far away (from me) that has benefitted from #slavelabor for hundreds of years (#USA).

I hope my country will use this opportunity to double down on the supply chain law to ban any slave labor anywhere in supply

#DJT can finally build Chinese-style #slavelabor camps to reward #incarceration inc industry donors and begin ousting weak law abiding embedded #CivilService workers cluttering federal agencies. #MAGA

If they are NOT being paid and are NOT allowed to refuse to work, are they really prisoners?
    Or are they slaves?

“In winter the bare trees are black against the snow and sky in the Old Burying Ground on Pleasant Street. Like frosting, snow decorates the gravestones of our town’s early families. The Bryants, the Bucknams, the Gerrys, the Greens, the Goulds, the Hays—our founders.

But beyond the cluster of 18th and 19th century stones, there are bare spots where no markers disturb the gentle slope of the earth. Here those with no status in colonial Stoneham lie in unmarked graves. Here are buried the town’s slaves.”

So begins the untold story of slavery and abolition in a town of farmers and shoemakers just north of Boston. Once part of Charlestown, the village was incorporated in 1725 as Stoneham, Massachusetts.
