  1. The World Is Studded With Artificial Mountains
They’re fake, but they can be spectacular (and hazardous).

[As I was reading this article I was thinking about Rome’s Monte Testaccio, an “artificial mound[s] in Rome composed almost entirely of testae, fragments of broken ancient Roman pottery, nearly all discarded amphorae [mainly for imported olive oil] dating from the time of the Roman Empire…”: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Te]

#Cement made with iron #slag has been widely used since decades. For example type IIIC have 83-95% of slag content. Slag cements yet have a very slow setting time. We'll see if they really get actual #clinker (Portland cement is a mix of clinker, gypsum and usually limestone)

  4. Thanks everyone with ID help. It looks like I’ve found a spectacular piece of slag, and not a fossil. Here it is after a bath #slag #fossil #industry #old

  5. Found a puzzling object while out on a walk. At first I thought it was a piece of driftwood but it’s very heavy rock. We get fossilised wood in this area but we also get slag from old smeltworks, so I’m used to finding both. I did wonder if it’s a knotty bit of fossilised wood but maybe it’s a weird bit of slag? The pattern on the lumpy bits is absolutely beautiful #fossil #rocks #geology #slag

  6. Well, I’m watching a video about #Slag to shed light on another interest of mine!

  7. Does anyone have thoughts on what this could be? I found it in an old dumping ground that also had a lot of industrial waste. It doesn’t look bubbly like the type of slag I’m used to seeing (iron or stone- based), yet I feel like this could be some type of silica-based byproduct? #Slag #Industry #Steel

  8. This artefact in the woods looks like a boulder, maybe a glacial erratic but the rust colouring and its position in a historical #coalmining and #ironworking area point to waste from #smelting. The word #slag bear comes to mind. Have I dreamt that name? #cinderloo
