  1. One of those charities I support whole heartedly -- help everyone meet and interact with working scientists, understand the methods and arguments in multiple domains, and how scientific consensus comes to be.

I try to give a talk regularly, but these days that's once a year. But talking with kids around the country about the brain, science, etc.--highlight of the semester, when I can do it. So I give $$ too.

  2. 🧒❓Many children & teenagers have questions about our changing climate. 🌍 That’s why #MPI_scientist Mia Specht is taking part in #SkypeAScientist. Through live online Q&A sessions, Mia connects with school classes around the world, answers their questions about #ClimateScience + the ocean, & shares insights into her life as a climate scientist.
It's an easy & rewarding way to make science accessible & inspire future generations.💬🌱 👉skypeascientist.com

  3. My #SkypeAScientist merch came in the mail! I got the "Biology is bigger than binaries" t shirt. Perfect for all the family gatherings! 😂🤣 (Photo is of a black t shirt with an orange and white bee and clownfish and a crocus? With the motto in big white letters.) #science #biology

That's available from Squidfacts Home -- Support Skype a Scientist with the Squid Facts shop!

  4. Aww 🥰 I got thank you notes today from the classroom I did #SkypeAScientist with last week! I enjoy the conversations with the kids so much I wouldn't notice if they didn't send a thank you-- but when they do, well, it just makes my day all over again! 💜 🧠

I told them about neuro* for ~20 min and then answered questions for 20 min, about life, the universe, and career choices. 😉

Def check it out. It is a SUCH a rewarding experience! #science #neuroscience #academia

  5. Oh my gosh answering questions from a grade 3 class in Minnesota for #SkypeAScientist was exactly what I needed this morning. There are some really smart kids out there. I have hope again.

  6. @sundogplanets

I got asked "How do black holes work?" while talking with one class through #SkypeAScientist .

My response was "That is a very good question."

  7. Just got a list of questions from a grade 3 class I'm meeting with for #SkypeAScientist next week and it's the usual combination of delightful ("Is it true that if there was a big enough bathtub that Saturn would float?"), out-of-left-field ("Why are dwarf galaxies a thing?"), and actually impossible ("Why did the Big Bang happen?")

This is probably my favourite kind of outreach.

  8. Just had a #SkypeAScientist call with Rumukoroshe School 🇳🇬 Lots of questions and interactive kids made it fun!

These calls let me bring #Science closer to kids who may not always have access to these kind of events & normalises scientists looking different than the cliché!

  9. Just had a #SkypeAScientist chat with an online classroom in Florida!

It was truly delightful to talk about the timeline of the formation of of the Universe and our Solar System (I did briefly wonder if I was going to get any pushback on the Gyr timescales in super-scary-conservative-Florida, but the teacher and students were all awesome).

Excellent student questions too! The best questions are always the ones I have to answer "We actually don't know, but people are studying it right now!"

  10. Oh WOW that #SkypeAScientist was really fun, such great questions!

(Except for one kid who was completely convinced the moon landing was fake, noooo).

It was also kind of depressing to say stuff like "you've all seen a satellite before, right?" and realize, no, they all live in such a light-polluted place (NYC) that they have never even seen stars. Maybe the moon? UGH.

Once again, I am so grateful I get to be an astronomy prof in a place where I can live on a farm with pretty dark skies!

  11. I got questions for #SkypeAScientist next week from a grade 5 class, and they are delightful!! My favourites:

Q: Have you ever been to the moon?
    A: No ☹️

Q: How many digits of pi does an astronomer need to know? How many do you know?
    A: 1. 10ish?

Q: How fast was the meteor that landed near Lake Chernobyl in Russia?
    A. Chelyabinsk maybe?

    and the winner:

Q: Why is the universe expanding if gravity pulls things together?
A: We have no idea. We call it dark energy to sound cool, though!

  12. I just got a #SkypeAScientist match with a classroom in a numbered school in New York City (my theme is New York today, apparently). Cool!

  13. This is one of the coolest initiatives I’ve seen in a while. “Skype A Scientist” allows families, school groups or individuals to have direct Q&As with scientists from dozens of fields, from astronomy to virology, and social sciences to neuro. And they’re looking for more scientists too, so why not get involved as a source? Sign up for the next sessions, get the email & more here: skypeascientist.com/sign-up.ht

  15. It's day 2 of the United States of Science!

Let's take a look at some states we can close out this morning. Remaining bubbles:
    NV or OR: 3
    AZ: 4
    KS: 6
    WA: 8

Those big states need help too 👀
