Guess who's back. Pépé has been visiting every night for a week now. Cleaning up the yard of its grubs and whatnot. June bugs are out like mad now so maybe those are on the menu as well.
Isn't this just the shittiest quality photo? Haha. I don't care.

Do you think #Skunks would prefer the Anti-Tick pellets formulated for Dogs or the one formulated for Cats?
Either way, I've had 3 ticks my entire life, until this year when I've got 6... And the skunk probably isn't making the groundhog hole any bigger. Even though, I probably should fill it before it affects the foundation; we kinda like the skunk.

From the ad copy:
"Do you ever pick up a whistle without blowing it to see how loud it was? Did anyone? No!"
Actually, I've never picked up a whistle and blown *into* it to see how loud it *is*? (I guess "was" would make sense if you were blowing it with a grenade or a bomb.)
For all I know that thing would have been sat on by a wild skunk, and I don't want to try the taste of wild skunk butt, thank you very much.

Judging by the Great Wall o' Text accompanying this ad, I'm going to assume they've overcompensated for a lackluster product.
Your little squirrel probably looks like an incontinent skunk who is dribbling pee on your vest.
"Take a look at my ornament!"
"Hmm.... it looks like a skunk... and why is it peeing on your vest???"

You like skunked beer, but no longer drink alcohol?
We've got you covered.
Tried our new Skunk Water flavoring. You open the pouch, like so... and your nostrils are immediately traumatized by the unmistakable aroma of skunk. Hmm... skunk! Then you pour our mix into water and mix it thoroughly, and voilà: you've got a beverage so strong that your eye will water as you drink it.
Skål!

I've now seen Dr. Jerry Dragoo acknowledged in two different children's books — involving skunks (of course). I wonder how many he's mentioned in.

Sigh…
I’ve been battling this cute little guy for months. I tried scaring him off with lights, skunk juice…everything humane. But he’s persistent.
He bombs my workspace and already got one of our dogs. Even though I fenced them out.
So we had to dig an underground barrier and put a one-way door at his entrance. Evict him. 🥺
The trail cam caught him trying to get back in. He looks sad. My heart is broken. 😭🦨

HEPA filters help. This is another fabulous reason to keep that Corsi-Rosenthal box you built early on in the pandemic. Or whatever air filters you may have, crank them up. Open up windows if possible (assuming it doesn't stink worse outside), turn on fans.
I'll follow up later with a report about how the deodorizers work (I got some for both dog and carpets).

Water activates the skunk oils, so the dog is going to actually smell worse at first in the bath. I suspect this is why some product reviews for deodorizers have complaints that it made the dog smell worse. It's not the product, it's the water. Bathe them anyway, it has to get worse before it gets better, I guess.

The DIY mix of hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish soap does kind of work. Somewhat. But who has a quart of hydrogen peroxide lying around? Actually I did, thank god, but I'm hoping the specialized stuff is better (waiting on delivery).

So, one of my dogs must have startled a skunk in our backyard last night, and I have some advice.
If you have dogs, and even the smallest suspicion that there are skunks anywhere around your property, get yourself some of the deodorizing shampoo in advance. Skunks are active after dark, so when it happens, you will not be able to run to the store to get supplies. Even if you can, you won't want to, you'll want to get that dog into a bath as fast as possible.

Heard some angry sounding small animals outside. Thought maybe fighting squirrels or birds. Then quiet. Then the smell of skunk! Wah!
Windows are all closed but the circulation fan in the furnace was running and the AC and intake are on that side of the house.
I quickly shut down the system, but I suspect it'll be a smelly ol' night.

Dear, Mastodonians. I need your help.
For months I’ve been battling skunks. They’re burrowing beneath my studio.
I’m an animal friend so I won’t hurt them. My “battle” has comprised deterrents. I’ve tried what the internet told me: anti-skunk concoctions, motion-sensor lights, etc.
Has anyone waged this war and won?
I’d leave them alone if I could. But our dogs have already been sprayed once. And that’s my primary concern.

A skunk prevented me from taking out the trash and recycling bins. I was rolling out the recycle bin and the skunk was just hanging out in the front yard by the end of the driveway. Maybe it lives in the culvert.
I had to abandon the bin and retreat
Second time I’ve run into that skunk on trash night. It’s very distinctive - its back is all white, an unusual but not unheard-of variation among striped skunks
I’m way more afraid of skunks than, like, scary spiders or venomous snakes

This is my niece. Lean about skunks and what really do to if sprayed.

Made a friend last night. They weren't as enthusiastic. (Shot through the screen and zoomed in with my phone camera for lesser quality.)

#BirdFlu Has Now Been Discovered In Several Species Of #Texas Wild Mammals
by Renee Raven
Published: April 21, 2025"#AvianFlu, a.k.a. Bird Flu or HPAI, has recently been discovered in several species of wild mammals, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (#TPWD).
Which Texas Animals Are Infected With Bird Flu?"This highly contagious pathogen has been found in several mammalian species, including #foxes, #raccoons, striped #skunks, and #DomesticCats.
Where Has Bird Flu Been Found In Mammals In Texas?"#DeafSmith, #Hansford, #Lubbock, #Ochiltree, #Parmer, and #Randall Counties all had mammals test positive for bird flu. This will likely spread to other counties.
What Impacts Will Bird Flu In Mammals Have?
"Needless to say, this could cause a devastating impact on both wild and domesticated animals and birds, including pets and backyard chicken coops.
How Are Mammals Becoming Infected With Bird Flu In Texas?
"The wild mammals are primarily becoming infected through eating the corpses of birds that died from the flu (so outdoor #cats are at a high risk), however, mammal-to-mammal spread is possible."
