Im Serbischen & Mazedonischen wird es bis heute auch gegen Nicht-Albaner(innen) als Schimpfwort verwendet – für jemanden, der als rückständig gilt.
In den 1990er Jahren wurde «Šiptar» ein Symbol von #Marginalisierung & #Entmenschlichung – bis hin zu Hassparolen im #Kosovokrieg (1998–99) und in #Mazedonien (2001).
Auch heute ist der Begriff präsent: in nationalistischer Rhetorik, #Graffiti, #Hooligan-Szenen.

Pictures of my ride with the #HellasExpress from #Skopje 🇲🇰 to #Belgrade 🇷🇸 (although labelled in the opposite direction) in May 2011. Originally running from #Dortmund 🇩🇪 to #Athens 🇬🇷 (hence its name) over almost 3,000 kms, the train had been reduced to 2 seating carriages - enough for the 400 kms day-trip.
