A quick wrist roll of my Skmei watch
-
@SecretAntelope Their name is actually 时刻美. They choose #Skmei as a transliteration for languages with Latin scripts.
Take that Chinese and stick it in a service that will read it out for you, like Google translate. That is their name and how you pronounce it.
I like that they embrace their Chinese roots and did not try and make a fake European name. Would you want Casio to have selected a European name?

The viewing angles on the #Skmei 2514 are still not quite Casio level but they aren't terrible either.
These are IMHO fairly extreme. Day to day I would be unlikely to look at the watch at angles sharper than this.

So I picked up a #Skmei 2514 as well recently. This is a very close copy of the Casio A168WEHA-9AEF. With recent reports being that Casio is killing off the A168 altogether and with this variant already being discontinued for a while I can feel OK with this purchase. Yes you can find a few places with some old stock or well maintained second hand copies, but they would generate Casio no money and cost 10x the price (for a plastic watch). The Skmei is metal and cost just $8🇺🇲.

I bought a #Skmei 2460. It might sound like blasphemy but I've been aware and considered the #Casio A1100 multiple times over the last three years (since release) and just never pulled the trigger. The thing is, I had a A100 before and the lack of 24hr option always bothered me.
I eventually realised that I didn't want/need a full reissue and when I noticed that the recent Skmei homage provided 24hr, I decided I would go that route because it is not like Casio is missing a sale from me. 😉

Awesome, it looks like #Skmei has started to embrace alternative ways of displaying time. 🤣

Welp #Skmei watch came in. For $20 it has astonishingly good build quality. At least thus far. Will report on whether or not it turns my wrist green. It has *heft* - definitely not just a plastic shell. The negative display is regrettable but manageable. But *weirdly* - and maybe this is a Skmei thing, dunno, this is my first one - this is the very first digital watch I've ever seen that *doesn't hack* - that is, you can't set the seconds!!

Decided to wear my Skmei watch today as my main Casio I have the band off at the moment. Story of that is I got a new band that is a two part nato strap only for it to not fit on my Casio. Its a bummer but I am thinking to get a one part nato instead that would fit.
If anyone has any recommendations on nato straps that are good that would be helpful.

Skmei watches are well built. They are really cheap and I have no allergies with their bands (not like it happens with casio). Sadly they clone casio designs but mimic their mistakes and ads extra ones just to circumvent copyright issues. Wish I could just run #sensorwatch in them instead #skmei #digitalwatches

Really not a fan of this watch. I sort of hate it a bit. I knew I wouldn't like it before I bought it. I actually bought it mainly to check on some things and see how #Skmei is progressing in certain areas. However even with my low expectations it is disappointing.

@rl_dane Here is one of their recent, cheap, digital models (2450), featuring a retro style that is not AFAICT a straight up copy of anything.
That said, clearly the design hits all around the Casio LF20W, LF-30W, WS-1600H, AE-1200WH and AE-1300WH mark, and the case and strap shape also looks very much like the Citizen Ana-Digi Temp. And yet it is 'not quite' any of them. Different enough to not be considered a full clone but certainly well within the homage territory.

A #WristCheck of an amazing value watch. It cost me just $6🇺🇸!!! 🤯
The #Skmei model 1096. It is labelled 'Solar.Lithium', which basically translates as 'solar assist'. It will preferentially use solar power and that in turn effectively extends the life of the battery. Indeed at a push it can actually run in a limited mode (not all features work) with the battery entirely removed (there is a capacitor, so it will even work for a bit without light).

It's such a cheap watch (<$5) but I love the black and yellow combo.
-
I decided to try it in another colourway out of curiosity (again… under $5, so 🤷🏼).
Very clean and highly readable but I think I still prefer the black and yellow.
-
I'm wearing the cheap #Skmei again. I still think this is great deal for less than $5.

Looking on AliExpress for a strap that pops a bit (yellow or red) and I came across this watch for $4, which is only a fraction more than just a strap. Also to get free shipping, I had to get over $10 anyway. So I just bought the watch because, why not? Actually I don't hate the watch, now I have it. 🤔
It's simple and does the job, kinda like a basic Casio does. Obviously a very different style. This one is actually one of their own designs AFAICT, rather than a rip off.

I received the $0.49 Skmei watch fron Aliexpress. The tax was more than the watch costs at $0.58.
It does feel like there is a catch somewhere in this because even at the normal price of $5 it still feels better than the price.
There are still advantages to the Casio but the Skmei has a better backlight while still being thin.
Highly recommend at least picking up one if you can find it for $0.49
