Last week was probably the best week, so far, to go skitouring. More snow than in the previous weeks, and despite increasing avalanche risk still enough routes to chose from while still being defensive in the selection. Since last weekend, it seems to be almost impossible (high avalanche risk).

Terrible news from the #Colorado #GrandTraverse (CB to Aspen #skimo race): Race canceled at the last minute!

Sounds like recent weather changes have made snow completely isothermic (unsafe), river crossings impassible, and evacuation routes inaccessible. Racers were told to go home.

Hopefully more information to come but my heart goes out to the several people I know personally (and hundreds I don’t) who trained so hard all year for this event.

I bought a pair of Cébé sunglasses some years ago, and they have served me well. That is top of the two pairs. Super lightweight. It is a cat3 lense and works well for sunny days, hiking or ski touring.

I recently purchased a polychromatic version which changes from 0-3. The frame is an improvement over the older version and sits well over my ears without any undue pressure on my skull. I wanted a polychromatic version for when light changes a lot. The clear lense in low light protects my eyes against branches or wind swept snow.

I am no lens expert, but these seem to stack well up against more expensive brands like Oakley.

Sometimes things just don't work out for you. This morning after the climb, near the end of the descent I faceplanted in the soft spring snow.

I was focusing on making a video and not on the skiing, so on a turn to the right, the left ski got dragged under by the cement and I went forward. Somehow I managed to bend my knees, so that the skis ended up above me - saved an injury I guess.

Given the bad snow situation, I had not hoped getting sufficient snow for a tour close by, yesterday. But we were extremely lucky in the Gamsmutterkar (Tennengebirge). Enough snow and reasonably good (given the current conditions).
