On the second and last day of our ski touring eastern we ascended the Rossbodenstock, skied down to Andermatt and took the train back to our car. As expected several others ascended the same summit. But it was far from crowded. Round about 20 people on the summit. The descent to Andermatt is fairly steep (rated AD+), so there we were for ourselves again. The first part was really very rough and icy.
But afterwards we were gifted with absolutely lovely conditions. We managed to ski almost to the first houses of Andermatt.Two really great days, well spent.

Slowly rebuilding lost fitness and mobility. This morning was the first time out on mountaineering skis for 2026. Was blowing hard near the endpoint. Full on spring conditions on the descent.

I’m a backcountry skier, maybe even a #skimo guy, and I don’t understand the #Olympic format “Ski Mountaineering” debuting this week in Cortina at all. It’s an incredible bit of athleticism, for sure, but where’s the mountaineering part? Five minute laps up and down a short, groomed course (with stairs?) is a totally different thing than skinning switchbacks up a steep meadow, negotiating rock bands, and surfing knee-deep powder through a glade… i.e., all the good parts of ski mountaineering.

What with the new Olympic #SkiMo event, thought I’d post this
Back in my Teton days I took a turn at ski building. Built a pneumatic press out of box steel, bolts, a wood top & bottom forms, & the pneumatic part made from discarded fire hose & an air compressor. P-tex bases, metal edges, & wood laminates. The Black Walnut skis were designed for powder, the maple skis were stiffer. Kid broke his hitting bumps. His had randonnée bindings, mine were tele skis, intended for off-piste #skiing. -

Not exactly the best conditions for skimo today at Salatín. Poor visibility and wind getting stronger with each meter of elevation.

Silvretta '25 continued with a ski tour from Jamtalhutte to Kronenjoch and to Ischgl. Long tour (just descend to Ischgl is 19km), but wonderful time. Skiing lines on the other side of Kronenjoch look fantastic. I will there next year.

Terrible news from the #Colorado #GrandTraverse (CB to Aspen #skimo race): Race canceled at the last minute!
Sounds like recent weather changes have made snow completely isothermic (unsafe), river crossings impassible, and evacuation routes inaccessible. Racers were told to go home.
Hopefully more information to come but my heart goes out to the several people I know personally (and hundreds I don’t) who trained so hard all year for this event.
