Sometimes my solo rpg games get complicated and bogged down, and so it's nice to have a moment where the PC goes through all the things that are going on, just like we do in real life.

Sitting down with some physical dice is wonderful. There is some magical quality of rolling dice with a clicky clacky sound of them hitting each other as you roll them.

When I started playing solo rpg games as a hobby I knew I wanted systems with less bookkeeping. But each campaign I play is longer and more epic which means more book keeping. Sometimes you need to say "NO MORE STORY THREADS! (for now)" (also NPC's)

I am always surprised how enjoyable it is to have to rewrite all my character/threads/chapter info for a new solo rpg journal. It gives me time to process the previous chapters and make alterations/corrections/deletions to proceed with the game.

A big challenge when I am playing a solo rpg is what to do when I get towards the end of my current sketchbook/journal. This game is still going on, but I don't want to have a game chapter that is cut in half between books.

As I finish filling in my current Solo RPG journal I choose to have a cut scene triggered by progress clocks. My PC get's one of his goals: to exist with a record and ID card, but his family is threatened by different factors and a new thread to follow.

I am journaling my game in a Moleskine notebook, but the paper is too thin for anything but a ball point pen which means it does not look as clean as previous games. I am sort of stuck filling out the book.

This is 47 lb paper and I would prefer closer to 80 lb when possible.

I play #solorpg games throughout the year when I have the energy and time and I love the world building and surprises. The game also gets more complex the longer it is played, which makes me appreciate the folks who GM long-running group games a lot.

Each chapter is a one-shot game session and the PC can have a specific goal, but also ongoing plot threads.

For this one my superhero PC had to attend a fancy party and had a ticking countdown of each fux-pa before something happened. I wanted to work with NPC's more.

I love to doodle and draw as I play, but I don't share much since these can sometime by quick and rough and not always represent my artistic skills. It's fun to have a hobby that can be just for me.

Set-up: J-Box has promised to find Bo, the living fiberglass buddha thanks to a clue from Mrs. Lu.

Tables flesh out the area around the clock tower, including a suspicious van with a flat tire.

An event roll gives a call-back to a stale thread, connecting the villain from chapter 1 to the current one.

Ms. Lu's magic-born husband is a fiberglass buddha J-Box helped called Bo. The only clue he has is a local landmark.

With set-up done, on to scene 1.

I next have a list of questions to answer/story clocks/threads. I have established enough threads for lots of game story.

Complex games take a lot more book keeping. Not a fan, but a necessity.

For me, the secret sauce in a solo games are story clocks inspired by Blades in the Dark (and other PbtA games).

This makes a perfect table pf CALLBACKs to bring in details from previous parts of the game.

I am using a ballpoint pen since the black ink pen bleeds through too much.

Here I write attributes for my character that will shape a pool of d6 dice when I try an action. Mind, body, flaws, edges, drives, etc.

I am using FU: Freeform Universal, but there are lots of options to try. I just like how simple this one is.

Time to continue my game in a new game journal.
On page one I start with my PC (player character) drawn with them introducing themself. In this case the PC is a magic-born would-be superhero, J-Box K.
I make corrections to some of the details (his name is Kurt (not Kirk)) and add new details like unnamed grandparent (who might come visit in a chapter).

- Work might waylay the game a bit.

I only had a few pages till the end of my sketchbook, so this is just an interlude.

- Kurt (i.e. J-Box K) walks at night to the mysterious private club
- Ms. Lu's son meets with a pair of twins and gives a cryptic message to J-Box
- surveillance at the pet store and a weird fish
- a sudden rainstorm leads him to overhear the scientist from ch 4 who has been fired

- ... heads to Yardish Point to look for Bay Buster (BB).
- .. the son of a surplus store owner is acting weird.
- Meta: I know BB's secret identity, my character does not.
- ... successfully fibing to security guards after getting catch.
- ..tells his parents everything that has happened, asks for help.
- ..in anger gives away his identity when BB shows up and refuses to help.

- The next morning...a call at the music club from Ms. Raven says he failed on his part of the bargain, reneges on her promise to get him an ID.
- decides he will find a way to contact local armored hero 'Bay Buster' for advice.
- plans to talk with his folks on what's going on.

- Finds a questionable rug store.
- Races back to work at his parents music club.

Finished the chapter in one session.
- Comic book rules, I don't need to explain how J-Box K can find a dress shirt and slacks that fit.
- Introduced a local wind powered superhero Windra, a clown makeup wearing musician and sibling villains Freight and Tug.
- Trying to figure out fun narrative combat.
- Edits to homebrew to make it work better.

Chapter 4 of my solo rpg game begins.

The set-up: J-Box K is incognito with a regular from his mother's music venue at a special event at Star Sail inc's 'pavilion.' The town's biggest business is revealing new tech with an out-of-town superhero celebrity being featured. There should be superheroes & villains in attendance as well as all sorts of shady players.

What could possibly go wrong?

- J-Box thrown in jail for minor charge which is a problem since he does not exist (birth certificate, etc)
- Mysterious lawyer Cassandra Raven will bail J-Box K out for a price.
- Quick visit with his family finds his amature witch mother doesn't like Ms. Raven.
- Must deliver another magic born resident to safety.

I did not realize what of the real world would leak into my solo game sessions, but I am glad when it does.

- My 'magic born' superhero, J-Box does not exist in the sense of having records/ID, etc and so getting arrested was not a good idea.
- The outside world mostly see J-Box as a robot or someone in armor instead of a unique being.

- asking bluntly with "naivety" allows an almost straight answer on what's happening.

- Finds the police detective has no memory of the villain with mind control powers in Ch 2.
- Fun scene with J-Box K listening to the music CD that is his heart
- He is bailed out by the mysterious lawyer, but now has to repay with a favor.

- His one phone call is to a family friend he hopes will get a message to his parents.
- A rigid detective can't accept that he is neither a robot or someone in armor.
- A mysterious lawyer knows a lot about him and will help... for a promise.
- A hypnotized officer tries to kill him.

This will be a multi-focused chapter, longer then the first two.

- playing just a
'chapter' requires just one challenge which is easier to track, but lacks the exploration and nuance of a longer game.

- Estimating how long to set a tracker in a solo game can be hit-or-miss.

- I like using the Drama Points, but it definitely makes your brain work differently then other game systems.

Two more illustrated solo RPG journal pages from a quick game.

PC: Gramp-Star, an elderly 'super-soldier' superhero. He was a blast to play and draw with his 'muppet' nose and flowing white hair.

I always feel awkward posting rough doodles, but some drawings are just for fun and don't have to be a masterpiece. Drawing in your game journal is a great way to KEEP DRAWING.

Played another scenario of @trollishdelver English Eerie. I had missed a rule and wanted to play it again.

- I played the scenario "Cuckoo" as 'Sandy Cooke, TV presenter.

- I played with more 'Spirit' tokens (vs. Resolution tokens)

- Label the scenario printout with the card suits helps a lot.

- Taking notes of the 2ndary characters details helped me to remember them when playing.

2/2 Thoughts on SuperCity24

This year, 2024 I drew the size of a trading card (2.5" x 3.5") on watercolor paper from Diaso in SF. Drawn in Micron pen and tinted with watercolor.

These drawings weight a lot less then 2023's sketchbook (1 oz vs 11 oz) so should be easier to lug around, but have a lot less details. Using the cards in a game should be 'seeds' to develop the world through solo RPG play.

1/2 Thoughts on SuperCity24

This is the 2nd year that I did an art challenge in Jan to worldbuild for a solo RPG game.

In 2023 I had a 8.5" x 5.5" sketchbook and did fairly elaborate drawings. I included possible characters and history. It was really fun to use in my game session, but the sketchbook was too heavy to lug around (w/ a journal as well), and looking up details the father along the game went was a challenge.

A town made successful, originally from the Heath Textile Company. The owner Helena Heath was a (mostly) beloved figure who tried to do right by her employees.

Besides the university, the town is still known for textiles, but a high-tech version with Star Sail, inc.
