@Ruth_Mottram a nice rabbit hole for a rainy day! Seems skein is interchangeable in different places for a loose oval ball of wool and a twisted hank. The hank is definitely more goose like. Hazel Stainer, designer and writer, has an interesting summary focused on the #wool ball itself. Gives rise to further questions for me that might illuminate the etymology further...

#Knitting #ProTips If your tension is too high, simply unknot your ball of yarn a million times like me and you'll have a much looser gauge. 🥴 I want to start my second section of my #blanket, but I am waiting for my spindle to arrive tomorrow so I can stop the knotting hopefully by avoiding pulling from the middle of the #skein.
I've been enjoying #EldenRing and have a little app to tell me where certain things are. It's overwhelming how many things there are to do and see. My wolves ashes seem way too OP... I'm not great at dodging yet though. :( I beat some troll boss 💅 before the #SteamDeck decided it needed charged. 😖

You #knitters are so patient! I feel like I've spent so much time on this #blanket-to-be, and it's still very, very thin. 🤣 Maybe a bit larger than my wrist. I've not even finished one #skein. My plan is to finish this skein to its final row, and then do a few of a neutral, non-twinkle #yarn, then finish with one more full skein of this colour. There are a handful of unsightly holes from dropped #stitches, but I am trying to embrace them as I do with my white hairs.

Oh, while we are at it: A group of geese on the ground is called a #gaggle; when in flight, they are called a #skein, a #team, or a #wedge; when flying close together, they are called a #plump. Here they had a short layover with lunch break at #HydePark, #London.
