Hah, forget us. Looks like TNS had a good roll up past the reservoir in the #Bronx, including a stop outside Yankee Stadium. (No, not in this photo. You silly.)

Oh, wow. Looks like anyone planning to skate (or ride) to Jersey via the GWB this Saturday is out of luck?
-
The rain in the weather forecast seems to have just… gone away, but OMG, it was 81% humidity when we went #InlineSkating #NYC late Saturday evening.
We hope you're all having a great three-day weekend and getting in some extra time on your wheels.
-
Weekend weather is looking sketchy. Saturday could be okay, but best for #NYC skaters to get their rolls in early and make no skate plans for the evening. After that, pray to the bearing gods! (ABEC lord, we praise thee, etc.) Sunday looks like a possible wash.

In what will be good news for some of the more adventurous #NYC skaters, we are happy to report that the recent NYC DOT street resurfacing of First Ave in the 40s included the UN tunnel. We thought they were just going to do the approach and exit and the surface road above, but no they did the tunnel, too. And did a sweet job of it.
Now if they'd just fix the mess that is First Ave from 35th to 38th. Sigh.

You love to see it.
We thought a week ago that the new lane striping on Seventh Ave from Times Sq down to 34th looked suggestive, but it wasn't finished yet and we wanted to see more evidence.
We rolled that way Sunday evening and discovered, there is indeed fresh kermit marking a new bike lane on Seventh.

Anybody who needs to know probably already discovered it, but just in case… if your access point for #InlineSkating the WSBP / Hudson greenway has been via the underpass at W 59th, maybe it's time to explore new options. It wasn't great anyway, but one of the utilities recently did some work at the intersection of W59 and Riverside Blvd. So now the intersection is even rougher plus there's gravel all over.

Skate peeps, we had a fun non-TNS skate late Tuesday night. (We started 2 hours after TNS did.) Weird route to the Unisphere because someone else was choosing the route, but on the way back, OMG... 30th Av across #Astoria #Queens #NYC from 49th St west to the subway at 31st St. Recently repaved and just an absolute dream to roll.

Nine days 'til BIg Apple Roll 2024 begins. Again, keep your fingers crossed about the weather.
We should mention that in addition to all the #GroupSkate activity and a couple parties, there will be raffles and shwag and more. So there's more to it then just showing up on wheels.
-
And we're down to less than 2 weeks to the start of Big Apple Roll 2024. First official group skate of the weekend will be at 10 a.m. on Aug. 1, starting downtown from the event hotel in the Financial District.
But we've already had a skater from Belgium tell us he'll be here the day before, when he can roll Wednesday Night Skate.

Anyone know what the story is with the water covering the Hudson River bikepath below Pier 97 (about W 56th St). We thought Thursday night it was a one-time thing but there it was again Saturday night.
We know 95% of cyclists don't care about this (ooh, some water splashing my ankles!), but it can be a big problem for skaters. Not just the slipping, but also the possible damage to skate bearings.
Good thing there is a navigable detour.

We're down to less than 4 weeks to go to the beginning of the Empire Skate Club's annual group skate weekend, the 2024 Big Apple Roll. Four days of rolling around #NYC with locals and many visitors. Or join in early and also do the weekly Tuesday and Wednesday night skates. There's a party on the schedule also, maybe two.
Full details at https://bigappleroll.org . Sign up this week if you want to reserve an event shirt in your size/color.

We hear there was a treat for Empire Speed skaters when they met for a training session this past Tuesday, two Olympic speedskating medalists were in attendance: USA's own Joey Mantia and Belgian short tracker Hanne Desmet. Checking Strava, we see Joey did two loops with the team and that he was back in the park Independence Day afternoon to skate another loop. And, yes, his times were fasssst.
-
So Hudson River Park does actually close and lock the gates on Pier 76 at night! Ask us how we know.

The countdown continues... We're down to 5 weeks from today for the first official event of Empire's annual group skate weekend, the 2024 Big Apple Roll. Four days of rolling around #NYC with locals and visitors. Or come early and also do the weekly Tuesday and Wednesday night skates. There's a party on the schedule also also, maybe two.

We're down to just 6 weeks until the start of Empire's annual group skate weekend, the 2024 Big Apple Roll. Four days of rolling around #NYC with locals and visitors. And there's probably a party in there, too.

After two months of navigating the scary pitch black detour on the WSBP [*] at 58th St after sunset, our minds were blown Sunday night to find the spot lit up like Times Square. Thank you to whoever [**] was responsible for this.
[*] West Side Bike Path = Hudson River Greenway for the young'ns.
[**] We complained to the Hudson River Park Trust about this spot a month ago and got a fast reply that it wasn't their responsibility, but was the city's. -
Now THAT brings back a lot of memories. And not just about the event itself.

Big Apple Roll organizers have officially set their dates, declared an event hotel, updated their website, and more. This year's Empire #GroupSkate weekend will be Thu Aug. 1 thru Sun Aug. 4. If you're extra hardcore, come early and do Tuesday Night Skate and Wednesday Night Skate with #NYC skaters. Full details at BAR's website at https://bigappleroll.org

If NYC DOT or anyone else wonders why people are cycling or skating along South St btw the Brooklyn Bridge and, IDK, the Manhattan Bridge (?), there's a reason for that. The East River Greenway is definitely getting worse than ever, and detour signs two blocks away don't really help much.
