  1. "Awake"
    Teableau for 04/19/26

The painting is of the tulip fields of Skagit Valley in NW Washington State; "Moonlight Tulips" by Jennifer McGill. It was chosen as the poster for the 2021 Tulip Festival.

  2. @erl Grumble grumble symmetric encryption and no forward secrecy.

But I’m working on getting more #Meshtastic devices up in #skagit north of #seattle

  3. Hype for the Future 78M: City of Mount Vernon, Washington

Overview The City of Mount Vernon is located on the north side of the Greater Seattle area in the Pacific Northwest to serve as the county seat of Skagit County, Washington, in the United States. The most notable feature of Mount Vernon is the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival; however, as with a number of communities of similar size within the State and into Oregon, the community is also home to a number of art galleries within the general downtown area.

  4. It’s adorable seeing NYTimes interleave conversations with folks at the #Snohomish River, right snug along the northeast of the Seattle metro, with folks along the #Skagit, up 75km north. But I guess the distance between Boston & Providence clearly isn’t worth making clear.

  5. Light brown area on this map marks the 100 year flood plain for the Skagit River in Washington State. #Skagit County officials have ordered everyone in that flood plain area to evacuate. Local news estimates that is around 70,000 people.

The red hash marks on the map are levees.

Zoom in on the map and you will see that most of the town of Burlington has been ordered to leave.

The river is now forecast to reach a new record high of about 38 feet at approximately 4am Friday. This at the streamgage (triangle) that is near the center of the map when it opens.

If you click a streamgage then you will see a popup. Scroll down in that popup display for 2 links to graphs with near real time water levels. Caution! The first graph is a worst case. The second graph shows probabilities that the water will get to different levels.

  6. If you’re in #Skagit county, you may have had trouble figuring if the flood alerts mean you need to evacuate. You need to look at skagitcounty.net/Departments/E

And if you're in the 100-Year Flood Plain, you need to leave today.

    Here's the map: skagitcounty.net/GIS/Documents

  7. Couldn't sleep and I was already planning on taking the day off, so I decided to try some bird photography on #FirIsland (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fir_Isla) in #skagit county. Fir Island usually hosts tens of thousands of snow geese every winter, plus swans and a scad of smaller birds. I saw a bunch of swans and ducks, but the geese were apparently hiding somewhere today. It's still hunting season, so I guess I don't blame them.

The weather was somewhere between "heavily overcast" and "solid mist"; not really my favorite weather for anything, but it was a quick trip, and gave me a chance to try out a new lens. I arrived at first light and hung out in the car until it was bright enough to see, and then discovered that an owl was circling through the parking lot, presumably looking for breakfast. I managed to grab a *terrible* picture of him; it was still semi-dark and my len's IS was turned off. Oh well, I never see owls, at least I have *some* proof.

  8. "Birthday Party" teableau for 04/29/25

This painting of a Skagit Tulip Festival is by Jack Gunter, a renowned Washington State artist and filmmaker.

  9. More work from the ceramic invitational at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. I don't usually like the type of very Junguan expressionism that Daniel Duford trades in, but I spent a good long while with this installation and I found it charming, almost nostalgic (it reminded me of so much art from the 90s, but that's just me). That coyote in the painting is going to haunt me for a while.

  10. More work from the ceramic invitational at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. Ariana Heinan (photo 1) makes these big ceramic and steel pieces with intensely colored but ultra-flat finishes. I've seen Holly Hudson's work (photo 2) at Seattle Art Fair; I love her playful manipulation of negative space here.

  11. I spent a very rainy Sunday at the Museum of Northwest Art in LaConner, WA. The current show is an invitational of Northwest ceramic sculptors and I was especially keen on seeing these exquisite pieces by Patty Warashina. I've liked her work for years, but this is really kicking it up a notch. Look how well placed and well lit it is, too--like it was made for this spot. The show runs though May.

  12. "Tea & Tulips" teableau for 04/06/25

Bountiful tulip fields grace the Skagit Valley every spring. My cup & saucer understood the assignment, too.

  13. From Padilla Bay to Bow then Edison, back down south to Mount Vernon and onto Conway where I had two tacos for lunch, then heading over to the tourist city of La Conner before heading up north to the start. I even saw a chicken cross the road (don’t ask me why).

  14. This is a reminder that talking about Cute Winter Boots online doesn’t change the world. To do that, you have to meet with people in your neighborhood, city, community. You have to help people where they are, not just give them likes.

And there’s only so much you should do over public broadcast communications.

(If you’re near the #Skagit, #Whatcom or #IslandCounty areas, I may be reaching out if you don’t ping me first.)

  15. "Washington state is losing farmland to development faster than much of the rest of the nation. But Skagit County is bucking the trend and providing a road map for others to bolster rural economic development."

Interesting article on farmland in County.

  17. First catch of the season. The water in the Chattahoochee was murky last night. I think the Lake Lanier is turning over? I also did not see any fish feeding on the surface I tied on a #10 (ish?) bright pink jiggy marabous streamer. Ended up finding trout stacked up next to the bank. They were striking my fly as soon as it hit the water. Had a couple of strikes, but it has been too long since I had a nice fish on the line. I only managed to land one brown trout. I was set up to swing wet flies with my OPST shooting head, but this was definitely a bank-shot style catch.

  18. Again looking at the USGS flow rate data for the Cheoah River at Bearpen Gap (waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-), it looks like the power company "turned off" the ambient discharge rate from Santeetlah Dam at the end of May last year and the summer river levels are quite low.

There are only two weekends on the schedule between now and the end of May that are not planned for high release "flood events". I'm sure that I can fish with my tenkara or do overhead fly fishing at the super low summer levels, but I am interested in finding new rivers to spey cast and swing wet flies.

It looks like I will need to get back up there this coming weekend and the first weekend in May to explore the swinging opportunities.

  19. "Tribes 101: About the Native nations that share geography with Washington state"

Great article in the Salish Current explaining tribal sovereignty in #WashingtonState and the 50th anniversary of the Boldt Decision that upheld native treaty rights.

  20. Caught my first White Bass on the Hocking River. Landed him right after sunset. I used a 200 gr OPST head with a 5 foot floating polyleader on a 4 wt Reddington butterstick v3. The fly is visible in the corner of its mouth.
