  1. The yearn for the Steelers to have youth at quarterback

Drew Allar almost certainly won’t start for the Steelers in 2026. Seismic stance, I know. But hear me…

  6. We’ve Updated Our Chrome Extension — The Same But Betterer!

A new version of the OMG! Ubuntu extension for Google Chrome, Chromium, and other compatible web browsers is now available on the Chrome Web Store. Didn’t know we had a browser extension? That’s on me; I suck at self promotion. In fact, this seems to be the first blog post I’ve ever written about our browser bolt-on since we launched it back in 2013 — not that it’s been forgotten; we’ve updated it regularly since then! Our extension makes it easy to stay on top of the latest posts. If’s perfect for those who don’t use RSS and only follow :sys_more_orange:

  7. Disqus Comments Not Loading? It’s Not Me Bro, It’s Firefox

Over the last 12 months I’ve received a trickle of messages from readers (through the tip form) asking why the Disqus comments section doesn’t load, or comes and goes. Comments are auto-enabled all articles I publish. And if comments are intentionally disabled for an article (which does happen, albeit rarely) you won’t see a comment count (functions as an anchor link to the comments section) in the ‘meta’ area beneath the headline on the article page. So what’s the cause of comments not loading? Mozilla Firefox with Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) mode set to ‘Strict’. The feature —I won’t be :sys_more_orange:

  8. That’s a Wrap!

    The die’s been cast.

Since this site has not generated enough income through ads or donations to cover expenses in keeping my site online, in another two weeks I’ll need to choose between going back to having a totally free-of-charge website or shutting it down.

While that might sound drastic, the vulgar ads that WordPress.com now places on free websites hosted with them brings down the quality of my site and I’m not interested in associating my site with these ads and certainly not subjecting you, my visitors, to them. (You can read more about this development on WPcomMaven.)

To ad (sic) insult to injury, WordPress.com recently removed the option to buy an annual “Add-On” to remove advertising. Now if I want to remove ads, I need to purchase an upgrade plan. Sorry, that’s not in my budget any longer.

On the bright side, I’ll have more knitting time now that the weather has finally cooled.

If donations don’t speak to you, and you’re in the market for some destash yarn, check out my current (and growing) offerings on Ravelry. Don’t limit yourself to the destash page. If you see something you absolutely need for a project on my regular stash page, ping me there (or here) and let’s make a deal. Don’t forget my books and magazines, too. Everything comes from a smoke and pet-free home.

  9. Happy New Year, Folks — Let’s Fill it with Linux, Yeah?!

A saccharine post of colossally cloy sincerity expressed through the medium of words (when I can enter them in the right order), topped with appreciation.

  10. Like design? Help me pick a masthead colour [Off Topic]

You may have noticed that the design of this site has changed a bit (mainly on desktop, though a few of the changes filter out to those of you who read from a narrower port of view). My main motivation is to make the site look a bit more punchy. As I’ve mentioned a few times in the past: I am not a designer. I really don’t know what I’m doing, other than making stuff “look nice” to my eyes, turning it into CSS, and rolling it out and hoping for the best. But I figured I ought to run :sys_more_orange:

  11. Commenting Issues?

A post asking for feedback about any commenting issues you're experiencing on this site. This post will probably be deleted in a few days.

  12. Do Not Adjust Your Monitor, We’re Supposed to Look Like This

It’s not your eyes, it’s not your monitor, and it’s certainly not Ubuntu: this does indeed look a bit different today. Admittedly it’s nothing major, but the site has undergone a once-over. We’ve refactored our :sys_more_orange:
