  2. Jamie Marsland asked Claude about #WordPress. Here's the result:

»What WordPress needs is a focused investment in the layer between the technology and the user — the tooltips, the empty state messages, the onboarding flows, the mode indicators, the contextual hints.

These are not hard engineering problems. They are design and communication problems, and WordPress has the community, the talent, and the user feedback to solve them.«

  3. @hgg
I still believe that something like a Customizer for block themes is missing making it easy for beginners to change basic settings per click.

Jamie Marsland compares classic and block themes and suggests exactly that as a solution.

Some block themes like Ollie Pro and Twentig One are going that way, but it really should be an additional layer in the Site Editor itself.

  7. Ahead of WordPress 6.8 Beta release and in absence of Anne McCarthy, the »Source of Truth« is published as a joint effort by Birgit Pauli Haack, Krupal Lakhia, Justin Tadlock, Jonathan Bossenger and JuanMa Garrido on the Gutenberg Times.

My highlight in WP 6.8 is the full-fledged Global Styles panel the Site Editor. I've been waiting for that literally for years.

  8. I’m not sure if it makes sense to have an empty group with large padding by default in WordPress’s Twenty Twenty-Five theme on the posts page if there is a result.

It comes from the nothing found area in the site editor:

It’s probably no good idea …

  9. Very interesting 45-minute-interview with Fränk Klein by @nathanwrigley on the WP Tavern Jukebox:

    »Redesigning WordPress: The Shift to Block-Based Systems«

I was into the concept of blocks right from beginning, so it was really interesting to listen to Fränk, who has been an advocate of FSE even before the term existed.

This is an early version of what the Global Styles in the Site Editor might look like. Hopefully sooner than later.

  11. @klausgesprochen @annette
    Konkretes Beispiel:

  12. The incredible @briancoords has recorded an 8 minute video demonstrating

WordPress Playground, Blueprints and 6.6 Beta
    youtu.be/a1Q24FwfDcA

He managed to make me want to explore the WordPress Playground, and at the same time he explained the changes in the content editor I was puzzled about: under the hood the JS of the site editor is loaded!

And I signed up for his 7 Tools series although I'm not really a developer.

  13. @annathepiper it is this sort of thing, and the issues you identified on your recent blog post, which have caused me to not even consider using the Site Editor. I've also pushed back very hard against the agency I work for from adopting it.

From my POV, the Site Editor is far from ready for broad use to be able to properly maintain your site. I also reject the idea that this is a "training issue". If it's not intuitive it's wrong.

  14. WordPress, Block Themes, & the Future of Page Builders: An Insightful Discussion with Jamie Marsland
    by @remkus

Thanx a lot for this, and yes, the Site Editor is too difficult for beginners, and that will have to change.

With block themes you get the power to edit styles and templates without code. Great for me.

With the Customizer you don't even have to know that styles and templates exist. Great for beginners.

  17. WordPress. Partially Synced Patterns (PSP).

Adam from WPCrafter explains in a 13 minute video how this not so attractively named feature will change the way we manage content on our WordPress websites:

  19. @hgg @pixolin
Ollie's Setup Wizard is great, but it should *not* be the task of a theme to enable beginners to build a site they like.

Gutenberg Phase 2 is not really finished until the Site Editor enables beginners.

As of WordPress 6.3 the Site Editor is a good tool for people who know WP and can write a little Custom CSS.

It's not a good tool for beginners who know neither.

Ollie WP shows a possible way to get closer to that goal.

  20. Matias Ventura about Gutenberg Phase 3 and WP-Admin:

»... the overall aim of this work is to improve upon this experience at a foundational design level, giving plugins and users more control over the navigation while ensuring each WordPress experience is recognizable, intuitive, accessible, and delightful.«

My first reaction was »What? Why don't we finish Phase 2 first and make the Site Editor usable for beginners ... «

  23. Gutenberg 16.0 mit »Page Management in the Site Editor«.

Fazit: »... you can practically build out a website without leaving the Site Editor ...«
