As a follow-up to my previous post, and with thanks to Jeremy Nickaruk for the inspiration, I went back to Sir Winston Churchill Square this evening in order to take these pictures. As you can see, the Moon Garden light show by Lucion is quite lovely.
The colours in the domes change every few minutes and I saw them purple, red, and orange.
It surprised me to realize that as the model railway train in the biggest dome circles the track its light casts shadows of the buildings and characters in the tableau onto the walls of the dome.
The images appear and disappear quickly, so getting a good photo is a challenge!
There were no skaters on the outdoor rink when I was there, but perhaps they were all enjoying their evening meal at the Sherlock Holmes Pub. I can confirm that it was full of happy diners.
And, here’s a funny sort-of-related story. As I was walking towards the library (which is beside Churchill Square) to meet my eldest child, I realized that the sidewalk came to an end at a construction site. I turned to another pedestrian who was in the same situation and I asked him how I could manoeuvre around the construction. He apologized! “I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have explained that you have to cross over the main street, walk up a block and around a pathway beside another construction site, and then you cross back over to the library.” I was in awe. This lovely young man did not only explain my way around a pedestrian blockage, he apologized for not having explained earlier! That is SO Canadian.

Today is bright and crisp in Edmonton, and I thought Churchill Square might be a good place to visit on my first day back in a long while. It didn’t have the food trucks and patio chairs I had anticipated, but it did have some interesting Christmas decorations.
The artist probably anticipated snow on the ground when they devised these giant snowballs, but sadly the lighting cable coverings are still very apparent. Thanks to some curious visitors who showed them to me, I discovered windows in one of the snowballs and when I looked inside I saw a very elaborate train set.
I could not find the name of the artist for the sculpture in the following pictures, but if and when I do, I will post it here. The colourful protrusions are a lot of fun, and they too would probably look even better if there were snow on the ground.
Here enjoying the skating rink in front of City Hall are a few folks who have it all to themselves.
