Update on Sea Level Dr Sinkhole & Evacuations
Update 9/9/2026 - The City of Malibu continues to respond to a sinkhole on Sea Level Drive caused by coastal erosion from high waves and tides associated with Hurricane Marie. The incident was reported at approximately 5:45 AM Tuesday, Sept. 8. The collapse of a beachfront driveway extended into the roadway, blocking resident and emergency access. Sea Level Drive has a single entry and exit.
Overnight, the sinkhole and erosion did not significantly expand. SoCalGas shut off gas service Tuesday evening to address a gas leak and prevent further leaks. Waterworks District 29 shut off water service to prevent water main breaks.
The City proclaimed a local emergency and issued an evacuation order for 31 parcels. All 31 properties have been red tagged due to hazardous conditions and the loss of access for Fire and Sheriff’s personnel to respond to medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies.
The HOA, which controls the private roadway, began repairs with City permits within hours of the incident. The HOA is continuing further construction for repairs and shoring up the area, which is expected to be completed in about 5 weeks depending on conditions.
The City continues to coordinate with LACFD, LASD, SoCalGas, American Red Cross and the HOA. No injuries were reported.
Public safety remains the City’s top priority, and the mandatory evacuation and red tags remain in place. We understand how difficult and disruptive this evacuation is for affected residents and are working with our partners to stabilize the situation so residents can return home as quickly and safely as possible.
This incident is part of broader regional coastal conditions. The City is also monitoring coastal erosion along PCH in the Palisades Fire burn area, Point Dume State Beach, and is monitoring other vulnerable points along the coast. The City is preparing for potential strong storms, high surf, heavy rain, mudslides and coastal erosion this winter associated with forecast El Niño conditions.

In central Anatolia, where the agricultural fields of corn and wheat and beets stretch out for miles, the ground looks like it has been attacked by a cosmic hole punch, punctuated by a plague of craters. According to the Emergency Management Authority, 684 of these massive abysses have opened in the Konya basin, with one of the largest stretching to 228m (752ft) in diameter and 171m (564ft) deep, marring the region often called the "breadbasket of Türkiye". (May 1, 2026) Following the emergence of a sinkhole earlier this afternoon, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) crews from the Environmental Systems Division are conducting emergency repairs on SW Alder Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues.
To safely repair the street, it must be closed to all motor vehicles overnight, with the expectation that it will be open by early Saturday morning.
Crews arrived on site at about 4:45 p.m. and early assessments showed a sinkhole sized at approximately 6x6x4 feet. A camera investigation followed and found two holes leaking from a 12” main line of clay pipe from 1898 running between two maintenance holes. These leaks had slowly been forming a cavity under the road surface. As can be the case with sinkholes, particularly in warmer months, this cavity was exposed when temperatures warmed this week and the asphalt softened.
Crews will now excavate the road and replace the pipe before covering the road with a steel plate. PBOT paving crews will return early next week to resurface the road and give it a new, smooth surface.
The traveling public is advised to expect delays, travel cautiously, observe all closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. Local access to residences and businesses will remain available. Public transit riders should check TriMet.org for service impacts.
