(May 1, 2026) Following the emergence of a sinkhole earlier this afternoon, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) crews from the Environmental Systems Division are conducting emergency repairs on SW Alder Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues.
To safely repair the street, it must be closed to all motor vehicles overnight, with the expectation that it will be open by early Saturday morning.
Crews arrived on site at about 4:45 p.m. and early assessments showed a sinkhole sized at approximately 6x6x4 feet. A camera investigation followed and found two holes leaking from a 12” main line of clay pipe from 1898 running between two maintenance holes. These leaks had slowly been forming a cavity under the road surface. As can be the case with sinkholes, particularly in warmer months, this cavity was exposed when temperatures warmed this week and the asphalt softened.
Crews will now excavate the road and replace the pipe before covering the road with a steel plate. PBOT paving crews will return early next week to resurface the road and give it a new, smooth surface.
The traveling public is advised to expect delays, travel cautiously, observe all closures and directions by flaggers, and use alternate routes if possible. Local access to residences and businesses will remain available. Public transit riders should check TriMet.org for service impacts.

Sinkhole mystery solved: Brynymor Crescent collapse blamed on old manhole – road could reopen before Christmas
Contractors have now completed investigations and confirmed the cause of the collapse was an ageing underground structure that had gone unnoticed beneath the tarmac. Backfilling began yesterday, and resurfacing is due to start next week.
If the weather holds, the road could reopen before Christmas – though heavy rain forecast for Monday and Tuesday may cause delays.
The update marks a turning point in a saga that began in late November, when a sudden collapse forced the closure of Brynymor Crescent and sparked speculation about historic mine shafts beneath the area.
Earlier reports suggested the sinkhole was “larger than expected” and potentially linked to old workings — but the latest findings rule that out.
Cllr Peter May said:
“The team have established that the cause of collapse was an old manhole beneath the road surface. This has now been dealt with and contractors began backfilling yesterday, with resurfacing to begin next week.”
Pending no unforeseen issues, the road should be open by the end of next week — or earlier if possible.

Een grote vrachtwagen met flessen frisdrank is neergestort in een sinkhole in Mexico-Stad. De locatie werd afgezet, nadat de vrachtwagen eerst met de achterkant vast kwam te zitten in het gat. Vervolgens schoot de hele vrachtwagen door zijn gewicht het gat in.

Worse yet... it seems that once the lists were poisoned, the source went offline as unresponsive. Cloudflare first reported a request as a #522 error, and then/now as a #523 error.
I need to go through more report logs to see where everything fell apart, so I assume the 'poison' list may grow in scope.
Unfortunately, there's more to fix. The #sinkhole retries 5 times to retrieve each updated blocklist file. If it fails, it uses the last successful download rather than remove it.

Well, this was a real pisser!
Yesterday was the random day I picked to do my weekly round of #Linux #updates on several dedicated servers, devices, etc. I do it manually, and at least once a week.
EVERY one of them failed! Every single one could not resolve the #repositories needed to update installed packages. Whether it was #MariaDB or #OpenLiteSpeed... it failed. Continously. Hour after hour.
The reason was an issue with my dedicated and local #DNS #server, which is also my #sinkhole.

There was a program on here in Australia last night that shows for every 0.1 degree increase in global temperatures, there is a 3% increase in #sinkhole occurance. They're calling this a landslide but it looks like a sinkhole.
