  1. ☕️🚫 Breaking news: Starbucks' "Widely Recyclable" cups were about as recyclable as your grandma's fruitcake. Turns out, Beyond Plastics uncovered that these cups didn't even grace the steps of a #recycling facility. 🌍♻️ But fear not, they're working tirelessly to stop single-use plastic pollution—right after their next coffee break.

  2. France postpones a plastic cup ban by four years.

The French government postponed a ban on plastic throwaway cups by four years to 2030 because of difficulties finding alternatives.

The ban was meant to start on 1 January. But the ministry for ecological transition said the "technical feasibility of eliminating plastic from cups" following a review this year justified pushing back the deadline.

  3. UK households to be paid to return bottles & cans

A Deposit Return Scheme is set to go live in England & Northern Ireland in October 2027 for all drinks cans and plastic bottles larger than 150ml.

Not a moment too soon given the amount of them still blighting everywhere.

Between now and then, anything could happen and probably will !

Remember, we always used to do this.

  4. When I was a kid, potato chips came in paper bags covered in foil. Single serving pudding came in tins. Pop came in cans or glass bottles. Milk came in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers. Groceries were carried in paper bags.

In my lifetime, single use plastics has increased exponentially.

And now we each have enough microplastics in our brains to make a plastic spoon.

    What a hero!

High time such plastic packaging reverted to that seen back in the 1970s and 1980s.

Metal tins were so much nicer and could easily be recycled from home without the need for a specialist processing centre.

It would be wonderful to see some of the old brands again too, rather than the 'Big 4' - Quality Street, Roses, Celebrations, & Heroes.

  11. So why does #BigPlastic expect people to #recycle plastic?

There is no cost to just discarding #SingleUsePlastic, and there is a cost in time and effort of the consumer to get the plastic to a recycling center; there is a cost to sort waste to extract plastic from a waste stream to recycle it; there is a still intractable cost problem of clean plastic for recycling.

So maybe the first step is to reward consumers for returning single use plastics for recycling. Of course, how does one generate that reward? And how large does it have to be, and how easy does it have to be to claim it? And what is the impact on low income households? And how is that system designed and implemented?

Big Plastic is profitable BECAUSE they have a one way process - make, sell, and forget. No responsibility after the sale for the end of life impacts.

  17. All great things are made of small things... Today, one of our students achieved proof of principle on turning #singleuseplastic bottles into filament for #3dprinting! Then a #benchy was printed..
From here we scale up production and start making #openhardware out of plastic bottles!!

  18. @popchicken
I love this idea. I empty the bin by the village bottle bank regularly. It never ceases to amaze me how many bags are thrown away, not just single use bags, Bags for Life too, some often look new

  19. Good to see a local coffee shop starting to do this on the #IsleofMan and hopefully one day the big brand ones will change also. Sick of seeing the mess single use ones make.

Governments need to push harder for this. It's not hard to clean a cup and bring it.

I've just seen that the UK Government will ban #SingleUse #Vapes. This is definitely a good thing to cut down on #SingleUsePlastic and other pollutants. Let's hope the Opposition go along with it!

  24. @gpollara

I guess it comes down to cost, but personally I would ask "If they can do it now, what have they been waiting for all these years?"

Why does it take a law banning the use of single-use plastic packaging before retailers or manufacturers will do anything major towards reducing #ClimateChange?

#Canada court overturns government ruling that some #plastics are toxic

A Canadian court on Thursday struck down a regulation classifying some plastic products as toxic, a ruling that could hurt a push by Ottawa to ban #SingleUsePlastic items like bags, straws and forks. The case was brought by plastics manufacturers. #environment

  26. Think that your #plastic is being recycled? Think again.

Plastic is cheap to make and shockingly profitable. It’s everywhere. And we’re all paying the price.

"#PlasticPollution—'a scourge on a planetary scale,' as French president Emmanuel Macron has put it—most affects those least able to deal with its consequences. Noting that the #PlasticIndustry generates upward of $700 billion a year in revenues, the UN Environment Programme (#UNEP) also concluded that the industry 'inflicts a heavy burden on #HumanHealth and #EnvironmentalDegradation, with the poorest in society facing the highest impacts whilst contributing the least to plastic over-consumption and waste.'

"This is true at every stage of plastic’s life cycle. #Manufacturing plants are concentrated in communities of color—such as in #Louisiana, in an area along the #MississippiRiver often called '#CancerAlley,' which is home to nearly 150 #OilRefineries, plastics plants, and #chemical facilities. Such plants emit #AirPollution that raises risks of cancer and other diseases. A panel of UN human rights experts said the situation amounts to a 'form of environmental racism [that] poses serious and disproportionate threats to the ... human rights of its largely #AfricanAmerican residents.'

"This pollution also disproportionately harms poor and developing countries that produce little or no plastic, such as those in #Africa, the #Pacific, and elsewhere."

Don't know whether you laughed or were horrified at what you saw.

This clearly demonstrates just how dangerous plastics can be for wildlife when tossed aside once contents have been devoured.

  28. Just removed no less than 27 plastic drink bottles from under a hedge.

They contained some type of fizzy liquid, didn't smell like alcohol. Was glad that they didn't contain "driver tizer".

They had been there some time as the liquid was under a lot of pressure since warmer weather arrived. It shot everywhere when the pressure was released.
