  1. It is now a prophetic saying that “When #fascism comes to #America , it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” This accurate prediction was inspired by the 1935 dystopian novel “It Can’t Happen Here”, written by #American novelist #SinclairLewis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Can%2

That novel had a plot, but the #FelonsCrusade is going according to the *nonexistent* plan!

  2. @ubuntourist
I looked it up to verify.

While the words appear in Chapter 9 of "It Can't Happen Here", it's actually a combined edit of several lines describing the character across multiple paragraphs.
    (Still dead-on though.)

It even mentions the future president speaking at the "Y.M.H.A" (predecessor to the #YMCA.) 😆

  3. I think perhaps we want a more conscious life. We're tired of drudging and sleeping and dying. We're tired of seeing just a few people able to be individualists. We're tired of always deferring hope till the next generation.

  4. Just look at the start of chapter 12 of “It can’t happen here” with an excerpt of the book of dear leader. Sound familiar, doesn’t it?

I'm still wondering whether Trump (or his writer(s)) could be sued for plagiarism?

  13. Good Books Now In The Public Domain

In addition to being the first day of the New Year, January 1 is also known as Public Domain Day, when titles previously under copyright enter the public domain in many countries, including the U.S.

This year’s titles include a host of good books by some authors you might have heard of including William Faulkner, Earnest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Dashiell Hammett, Thomas Wolfe, Sinclair Lewis, Edith Wharton and Mahatma Gandhi among others.

Standard EBOOKS is celebrating by providing links to twenty of the titles available to download in different formats that should work with most ebook readers.

These book titles, were first published in 1929. I won’t get into the length of copyrights and all the issues surrounding that, but instead say this is an interesting collection of works, some early or first works by some of the authors listed above.

Keep in mind that on Public Domain Day a number of titles in other media also entered the public domain. Duke University publishes a more extensive, but not complete list that includes titles of plays, movies, characters, music compositions, art,  and sound recordings. The date for sound recordings is 1924 and includes Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin.

You can find more of my writings on a variety of topics on Medium at this link, including in the publications Ellemeno and Rome. I can also be found on social media under my name as above.

  18. @benroyce @Vonskinnback @rameshgupta you are trying to insult, or not? Regardless, I take your point. Very #sinclairlewis of you.

It's more that I calculate the probablility as effectively zero. I care about the future of many things and want everyone to vote.

But if you're going to argue that my individual vote could've ever swung any election that's a steep hill to climb.

  19. Sinclair Lewis is one of my favourite American authors.

His novels are not only of historical interest, for they still offer valuable insights into the culture of the USA today.

I would particularly recommend the 1925 "Arrowsmith" to any student or worker in medicine or the life sciences.

  22. Fascinating article about the #V TV series on #VanityFair. It was inspired by a book called #ItCantHappenHere by #SinclairLewis. In the book, written in 1935, ‘United States is torn apart by a flamboyant blowhard politician who uses fearmongering and empty promises to the working class to win election before consolidating his power, shattering the traditions of governance, breaking any laws that constrain him, and stoking paranoia and division.’.

    How unrealistic.
