I miss the old Internet... the pure excitement of finding websites by enthusiastic creators motivated by love. And forums where people talked and it was easy to get help. And not being asked about cookies or worrying about seo, or mobile screens, or adverts, trackers, bad actors, etc. And dont get me started on #socialmedia. Sigh. It was fun back then. I wish there were more simple site generators out there that you could install on your server with an installer or by simply unzipping it to a folder instead of having to go through the whole Github and/or Netlify maze. Such a pain in the butt. It's one of the things I miss about the old web.

@jcrabapple Email to post is an interesting concept. I have browsed a few pages and I am digging it. I'll probably stick with my old static site (even though this looks way easier), but I love the idea of simple alternatives; especially, alternatives built on familiar tech. I mean, we all have email. I may give it a spin for funsies.

Have you looked at any alternative approaches that might align better with your #simpleweb and #nobuild goals? 🤔 There may be simpler, more stable solutions worth considering as well.

We should start a learning platform to teach average people to make websites by typing raw HTML/CSS. I think the web would be a better place if more people knew how to write basic HTML/CSS.

The article, in summary says this: more technically literate people have simpler websites, usually just static sites generated from even simpler Markdown. Less technically literate people resort to using WordPress, which requires a SQL server, a PHP server, and tons of computing power to deliver to your browser what could be done with a static HTML page with hardly any computing power at all.

This is because technically literate people can afford to do the hard stuff required to setup your own domain, including setting up the server, deciding how to produce content, and the mechanisms to keep content up to date. Everyone else is forced to use services that do all of that leg work for you, but insert a bunch of overly-complicated technology (like WordPress or Drupal), after all they had better deliver all of those flashy features that you saw in the demo, even if you never use 99% of those features. Or worse: people just use Facebook or Twitter as their homepage.

Sites like https://neocities.org offer static site hosting with a very nice user interface. They have good built-in tools for writing HTML, but I think they lack a good WYSIWYG site editor.

Pues vengo con otra duda sobre la web y es que llevará imágenes. En un principio las guardaré en mi PC, pero quiero subirlas a otros sitios por si acaso. Donde se suelen guardar las imágenes para no perderlas y eso? Había pensado en hacer una copia de la web en github, pero alguna idea más?

It's been months since the simple-web.org website went offline. It hosted several opensource alternative front-ends to popular proprietary services, as well as listing similar projects that do the same. It's philosophy was "users' privacy and no javascript."

While the projects themselves live on, the instance lists are outdated or gone. I have archived them and published a list of still working instances in this brand new homage to simple-web.
