#silvopasture protects farms against the two words often not spoken on farms:
"If you mention '#climate #change,'" Payne said, "it stops the conversation."
On Payne's 300 acres are the seeds of what will become 10,000 #trees.
There are also #sheep: 800 ewes and 1,000 lambs grazing on grass.
It's part of a method of farming called silvopasture. Payne and others see it as a solution for #sustainable, #climate-#friendly #farming.
"Silvopasture is not new," said Ashley Conway-Anderson, who teaches at the University of Missouri's Center for Agroforestry.
Silvopasture refers to
🌟 intentionally integrating livestock with forages and trees. 🌟
It creates an ecosystem vastly different from the rows and rows of typical farms."I think it's our responsibility, being in the position that we're in, to be as responsible as we can with the land that we have," Conway- Anderson said. "It still provides a lot of really high-nutrient density food. It manages landscape in a more ecologically friendly way. But it is productive."
It's also built for more extreme weather. On this day on Payne Farms, it's 35 degrees with 30-mph winds. The sheep use the trees as a windbreak. In the increasing and intensifying heat of summer, they'll use the trees for shade.

Are we doing #silvopasture yet? Yes, and cooperatively to boot. Good agroforestry practices are all about relationships between different species. Still, what good is a farm outside of its human community?
Having already moved to a cooperative model for our dairy herd, we are beginning a new collectivized agroforestry endeavor.
We hope our #agroforestry co-op serves a wide spectrum of needs, for our ecological and human community. Looking forward to demonstrating an alternative.

Fordhall Farm, Market Drayton. Everything they produce is farmed organically and regeneratively without the need for large tractors or machinery. They practice silvopasture, which is a way of considering how tree planting influences and aids wildlife/livestock on the farm. It is completely community owned and runs countless beneficial community projects. Every detail is considered, from water management to recycling all they can from the café/shop.

"Breadtree’s newest project is a 116-acre site in the Battenkill valley (east of Greenwich NY). At Doorways, we are restoring 65 acres of corn fields and gravel mines as a chestnut #silvopasture farm, and working to enhance the health and diversity of adjacent woods and waterways. We plan to trial a number of interplanting strategies, develop a program to verify the atmospheric carbon sequestered by our agricultural systems, and welcome partner farmers to manage complementary systems that integrate with the #chestnut alleys.
