    Close #relationships, e.g. cryptic species complexes, can lead to species being almost indistinguishable from one another. However, close relationships can also lead to #distinct #differences, as K. Tomihara et al. (2026) investigated at the molecular genetic level in the sister species of #silkmoths #Bombyx #mori and #Bombyx #mandarina. According to their findings, a conserved #Wnt family #genecluster is of particular importance, being associated with #morphologicaldivergence.

    For comparison with images I've been sharing from my @Raspberry_Pi motion detection #AutomatedMothTrap, an image from #BlackMountain Canberra, 5 January 2022 00:51, from a battery-powered timelapse version (#RaspberryPi Zero and HQ camera).

    On warm and busy nights, smaller insects often land on larger insects as with the two #Opodiphthera eucalypti #SilkMoths here: male (to left) with #Antictenia punctunculus (#Geometridae) and female (to right) with #Acropolitis rudisana (#Tortricidae)
