SILENT RUNNING (1972).
⭐⭐⭐⭐For some reason, this film was never on my radar, until recently. Wound up buying a DVD rather than rewarding our corporate overlords' stranglehold on culture.
What a melancholy, somber film. Having been alive in the 1960s, I can see where this film comes from—it's an extrapolation of the then-current and now ongoing battle between ecologists and corporations, to a final resolution. It's The Lorax, as a sci-fi film.

"In a future where all flora is extinct, only a few specimens have been preserved in a fleet of space greenhouses."
A sci-fi classic that shouldn't be missed. Bruce Dern was fantastic as Freeman Lowell👌

Two fictional characters that I've identified with for many, many years... The first one is #FreemanLowell from the movie #SilentRunning, an astronaut and gardener who tries to preserve what's left of what used to be life on Earth -- housed in domes in space. The second character is #RayFlowers / #RaeFlowers from #TheStand -- a radio DJ who reports on what's going on, even though the government is trying to shut them down. (I'm trying not to have spoilers -- let me know if I've not succeeded). I still feel like both of those characters to this day -- trying to save nature around me, and attempting to report on what's going on in the midst of #polycrisis. And yes, the government did try and shut this instance down. Things are feeling very dystopian right now...

As I'm reminded of the movie Silent Running, and it's ecological themes I feel a need for some explicitly Solarpunk movies to be made. Enough Superheroes, Solarpunk is in ascendance, Capitalism must die!

Organized the "seed vault" today. Threw out anything that had gotten moldy or was too old. I have some treasured heirloom seeds tucked away in sealed containers just in case (beans, corn, sunflowers, etc.). Hopefully this year, my black #walnut tree will start producing walnuts. The "mother tree" was one fully acclimated to #Maine. I've manage to keep alive a few #HeirloomPlants -- including strongly scented #lilacs, that I've rooted and planted in other locations. I've always idolized #FreemanLowell from #SilentRunning -- trying to keep my little corner of the universe green and full of food for the local wildlife.

It’s a #DayOff for me, and I’m taking care of some routine maintenance and rewatching the 1972 movie #SilentRunning. It stands up exceptionally well, and I really think it’s a classic.

I’d add #SilentRunning to any list of influential well done #sciencefiction #films of the #1970s.
In terms of the poll, while one can’t deny that ‘This Island Earth’ was a significant adaptation of a novel, MGM’s investment in Forbidden ‘Forbidden Planet’ reshaped ideas about what onscreen science fiction could be, profoundly influencing both film and television in the 1960s & 70s.

Yes, that was in #StarTrekSNW, however the #SilentRunning physical models seem to have been used randomly, without explanation, in #BermanEra #StarTrek. (I haven’t noted the episodes but recall in #TNG and perhaps DS9 battle scenes.)
