A really interesting article from the @index on #Sheffield based #Signwriter Ben Stevenson.

Missed this bit of festive cheer last month: ‘Schoolboy behind the Watten Christmas penguin inspired by signwriter grandad’.
The article includes a lovely 1965 press clipping showing that Alex Paterson (the grandad) was the Scottish apprentices competition held in Glasgow that year.

I walk, cycle and run past this mural between #BroughtyFerry and #Monifieth quite frequently.
"We come to a river we always knew we had to cross"
I had looked up the beautiful poem by John Glenday before, you can listen to him read it here:
https://poetryarchive.org/poem/river-3/But looking it up once again, I found this piece by the #SignWriter Barry Robertson describing how it came about:

Thank you to everyone that has already backed this Kickstarter to get signwriter Brian Walker's story told in a short biopic.

I've been contacted by an established shop in Hertfordshire that's looking for a freelance #signwriter to do a day or two a week with them.
Their work is for pubs, and they need someone that's able to get going straight away with shadowing, surface gilding, double coating etc.
This is not a trainee position, but there will be opportunities to learn 'on the job', and you'd need your own vehicle.
If you or someone you know might be interested, then send details to [email protected].

Piece profiling recently deceased Hull sign painter Alan Stutt, alongside a gallery of his work in the city.

My friend, sign painter, and all-round top man Shawn at Providence Painted Signs has had a tragic accident putting him out of work for the foreseeable future.
I would appreciate any boosts that can help spread this Gofundme to support him during his recovery/rehabilitation. And of course donate whatever you can.

Nice extended profile of Justin Lim, a sign painter in Fort Wayne, IN:
https://www.inputfortwayne.com/features/JustinLim-profile.aspx
“I would say surround yourself with other artists, I mean that's the best way to grow and learn different things. Plus, it's just inspiring to see other people's shops other people's studios, and other people's artwork. That kind of thing it just keeps you growing so you don't get stagnant, it humbles you to see someone doing like amazing stuff.”

Anyone know anything of Frank McComb and his sign shop? It is shown here on 9th St, Pittsburgh, about 90 ft north of Penn Ave, looking north.
The photo is from 1909, so the firm was contemporary to the H.H. Seiferth company recently profiled at https://bl.ag/seiferth.
Picture courtesy of the Pittsburgh City Photographer Collection, 1901-2000, housed at the University of Pittsburgh digital library.

Save the date: For all of August, there will be an exhibition in Bridport, Dorset, about the life and work of George Biles, a prolific signwriter, decorator, and scenic painter whose career spanned nearly 70 years.
A collection of his Palmers Brewery pub signs have survived, and will be displayed alongside drawings, and more.
I'll post more in the future, but for now, there is an extract from a 1932 article about Biles in the alt text.

My latest column for Signlink is a tribute to Dapper Signs' James Cooper (RIP). It can be read online from page 32 here: https://www.signlink.co.uk/archives/SLOctNov2023/index.html
They then decided to fill the cover with his work 😍

My favourite ghost signs category is those for sign writers/painters, so I was happy when Adrian sent me this one for Rickards, snapped while passing the wall on a train near Norwood Junction.
@RoyReed has added it to the map of London ghost signs that accompanies our book: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1KjHS8uGZeV08xYooNSgUUVZuiTSvXIRq&usp=sharing
The book contains an account of the history of sign painting in London, including some firms whose signs survive. That chapter is published at https://bl.ag/signproduction ($).

@gaelchlo Are you familiar with the work of Kevin Freeney?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/gentlemanofletters/albums
He is one of the #signwriters profiled in the #signwriting chapter of Dublin's Vanishing Craftsman by Kevin Corrigan Kearns.

(Only learned writing this reply that @internetarchive has the book in their collection.)
