Today I helped a user compile the #signet client for an #ARM based version of #MacOS.
It required changing a couple library paths, and I've already upstreamed those changes to the latest copy of the repo.
This was something I've been wanted to test for a long time now, but I don't have the hardware and it's hard to get the time of someone who does. But we did it. Together.
Hardware secured encryption is #cipherpunk meets #cyberpunk ✊

I finally have a partial answer to the question "how long will a #Signet last?"
Previously, we have never seen one wear out, but after 7.5 years, most of which was daily use, my 2017 Signet started having intermittent problems with the USB connector. I had to jiggle it to get it to work.
7+ years is better than you'll get from any commercial company, but here's the real kicker...
I replaced the USB connector and it works reliably again!

I am happy to announce the release of a new #signet case (and more colors)! All the same hardware inside, it's just a new look.
There are a couple slight variations:
- snap together vs screw together, and
- I have one without a keyloopWhat do you think? Prefer the cleaner look to the more functional option of having a keyloop? Want other colors? Let me know.

Working on an update to the #signet client so it can import the Keepass 4.x databases (currently it can do up to and including 3.
x).It compiles and works on Linux, but in order to be accepted it also needs to do so on macOS and Windows, and cross compiling the Windows executables from Linux needs to work for both 32- and 64-bit versions.
The keepassxc project has a bunch of dependencies, which is making this difficult. The libraries aren't packaged up elsewhere like they are on Debian. 🫤

Good news: we are helping to get a bug fixed in #QubesOS. It looks like the upcoming 4.3 will allow attaching a hidraw device on the first try.
That means no workarounds required to use #Signet on Qubes, and it'll likely fix other devices too.
(I've been using mine with #Qubes for years, but it'll be nice to not have to enable usb-reset-on-attach anymore)

New version of #Signet client has been released (0.9.22) for #Linux, #macOS and #Windows. https://hax0rbana.org/signet/downloads.html
The only real change is that if you try to import a keypass entry that is several thousand bytes, the client will alert you that it's too big and allow you to skip it.
Yes, it's another boring update. No vulnerabilities, no show stopping bugs.
This is what you can expect from this project. It already does what it's supposed to do. #Sustainable #development

To anyone wondering how many passwords can a #Signet hold: I don't know, because I've never reached the limit, but I can say that my personal device currently has 585.

Today's mission: find #0days in #Signet!
No, seriously, I'm writing tools to determine the impacts of a malicious client. What can the firmware defend against & what are its limitations?
Whether the code is vulnerable or secure, we should have proof. Right now the proof is "it's open source, just read the code" and that's not good enough. I want any independent security professional to be able to audit the firmware in a weekend, by themselves.

Today is another #Signet #Saturday and the exciting news is that Signet is now **certified** #OpenSource #hardware
https://certification.oshwa.org/us002683.html
And @oshwassociation does not have a low bar, either!
Publishing your gerber files so others can make PCBs... not good enough. You need to publish the files that generated those gerber files so others can make modifications to the board design. As it should be

In the end, all the #3DPrinted cases came out acceptably well. It was fun to make these incredibly small tweaks all day yesterday to get the model and printer settings tuned up to be the best quality possible.

I've been playing around with a new case design and I ran into some #3DPrinting settings that had some counterintuitive results.
Higher quality (smaller layer height) produced worse results.
The top #Signet in each picture was the one with the highest quality settings, but the keyring is rougher, and the USB-A hole isn't tall enough. The exact same model turned out fine with the lowest quality settings. While the layers are visible on the unit at the bottom of the photo, they're nice & smooth.

I just submitted #Signet to be certified as #OpenSource #hardware by @oshwassociation and I'm going to join as a member.
I was inspired by today's membership drive. Thank you for everything you do, crew.

Submitted an updated version of the #Signet add-on for #Firefox. I don't use the add-on myself, but a user reported that it didn't work on all sites that had a login on one page and a password on the next, so I fixed that.
I even got it to handle when there was a username field and then that field went away and was replaced with a password prompt without reloading the page.

For people who have NOT joined the #Signet project, nor bought a device. We want to hear from you.
- Feel it's no more secure than pure software?
- Don't feel you can trust it?
- Don't use a password database?
- Not enough time to help (provide feedback, report bugs, contribute code, etc.)?
- Too expensive ($45)?What's holding you back and how can we fix it to make the project more inviting? ❤️

Working on another prototype for #Signet Saturday
Pro tip: don't proactively add a droplet of flux to surface mount soldering. While it seems like a good idea, it will boil off and cause resistors and capacitors to go flying. Even a switch and the CPU were jumping up and down in my case!
-
Gotta be real with you all today, #Signet #Saturday isn't going great. I've spent the last hour and a half reseating this CPU, and adding/removing solder, waiting for it to cool and then testing it in my machine and I'm making only tiny amounts of progress.
I know many would say that I am wasting my time; that I should just call this one unit a loss and move on. The problem isn't the sunk cost fallacy, but that I don't want things to go to waste. At some point I will give up, but not yet…

Another great #Signet #Saturday! I modified the #Firefox #addon to work with sites who do their logins in nonstandard ways.
Code is merged into the default branch and a release will be cut soon.
Nonstandard ways include: not having a <form> tag, having the submit button outside of the form, not having any #HTML but instead, building the entire DOM after the page has "loaded" (according to Mozilla), splitting username and password to separate pages (or the same page, twice). #js #web #dev

There was a bug in the #signet client where it didn't check the size of #password entries when importing from #keypass databases. If they were too big, the import process would freeze.
Today that has been fixed in the #code and the patch will be included in the next release.
No security impact, but it was a usability issue.

The other thing I have going on for #Signet #Saturday is working on poor error handling when a password over 2048 bytes is imported from KeePass. It just hangs the import process and so not everything gets imported (unless the big one happened to be the very last entry).
I spent a couple hours going through the code making notes about what size checks are done at various places in the code.
If I can figure out a way to handle entries this large, I will, otherwise I plan on skipping them.

Another #Signet #Saturday and this week, I've opened a ticket on the #Qubes issue tracker.
https://github.com/qubesos/qubes-issues/issues/9367
Signets can be used in Qubes without this being fixed, but it currently requires attaching the device to a qube, detaching it, and then attaching it again.
If this issue is fixed, it'll work fine on the first attachment.
