Back from 2 1/2 weeks of intense travels to Wolverhampton (OMINO workshop and ELLIS ESSIR summer school) and then to Padua for SIGIR/ICTIR.

One of the main SIGIR/ICTIR takeaways – users of search engines will be more and more non-human. We need to consider this!

On-line presentations are important for achieving more diversity, equity and inclusion #DEI at #SIGIR2025. Not everyone can travel, for various reasons other than visas: For instance, disabilities, lack of safety or lack of Covid protections in the organizing country, financial situation, etc., etc.

The #SIGIR2025 conference is asking volunteers to present papers of random researchers that cannot present. If you cannot attend, your paper will be presented by someone else. There will be no on-line presentations.

I am disappointed by the total absence of possibilities to present on-line. We got a lot of experience organizing on-line events during Covid-19 times: Why is #SIGIR trowing that all away?

Harrie Oosterhuis got a paper in with Google (very exciting work, we saw a glimpse of it in a meeting and I'm looking forward to the actual paper going out), a resource paper by/with former MSc student Jingwei Kang (now doing his PhD at UvA).

Finally, Heydar Soudani has got himself a ticket to the SIGIR doctoral consortium with his PhD research.

I guess we should be happy!
