CW: Moments with my whippet: Castorp and the heat
During the current heat wave, my Castorp lies flat on his blanket all day, legs stretched out, minimal movements. I walk him in the very early morning, before 5pm, when the air is fresh. We understand each others passivity during the day; our shared bodily response to the unsupportive temperatures is an extra bond between us. In our house we have a gentle cooling airflow in the room by the garden, shaded by trees. We both enjoy it, there's no need to explain its quiet comfort to each other.

CW: Moments with my whippet: Castorp enjoys his run as the sun rises
Summer solstice. We were in the mood to mark the occasion and took Castorp to the hill, in time for sunrise at 04:52.
He was racing along across the field as the red ball of the sun emerged behind the next hill. It's been a while since I last watched an actual sunrise, I had forgotten how fast it all is: less than a minute from first glimpse to fully out.
Castorp is now resting contentedly at my feet.
Welcome to the longest day!

Castorp lies asleep on his blanket, next to me. Suddenly very heavy breathing, legs are moving, there's even a rare bark. (He never barks when he's awake.)

Ah, he's woken up now. He looks at me, silently. Hello, Castorp.

Working on a paper tonight, hope to finish it by morning. Having a break, a spot of mindless movie watching in my armchair. Everyone else is sleeping. Castorp lies on his blanket, right next to me, curled up like a cat. So good you're with me, buddy.

We still have four puppies from our large litter living at home. With each departure, it gets more difficult to see them go. Fortunately, Teal’s new best buddy, Wendell the Whippet fell for her immediately.

Night time, I'm in the middle of some writing. Castorp comes out of his den, he shakes himself up, then settles on the rug next to me. He sits there for a while, perfectly still. Then he gets up again and moves back into his den.
Oh that trust can be so complete and unpolluted.

Working in the night, writing my paper. Castorp calls me. I step over to his den, he stretches his head out and puts it into my open hand, ever so trusting. I gently scratch his forehead, he closes his eyes like a cat. I tell him about my worries, and that he is a good boy. He gets out and shakes himself up, as if he is wet from the rain and must shake out the rain. He does his night visit to the garden. When he is back, he gets another cuddle and goes back into his den to sleep. All is well. I go back to my work. What would we do without each other.

Sogar Atze hat sie so lang angespielt, bis der Opa aus den Federn gekrochen ist.
Der Gatte zieht los, noch im dunkeln.
Pina dann draussen: Es ist arschkalt, kein Hund weit und breit, trotzdem grosse Runde gedreht...
"Ähhh, können wir wieder Nachhause gehen, ich will ins Bett, bitte eine Ganzkörpermassage."
(Für die bin ich dann zuständig.)
Wie bei einigen Windhunden, wird sie nur ein mal im Jahr richtig läufig. Alles nie kompliziert, nicht scheinschwanger oder depri, in der Hochhitze heult sie nachts wie ein Wolf, das dauert so 1-2 Tage, keine angeschwollen Brustdrüsen, nach wenigen Tagen alles wieder ganz normal, ich feier das sehr. 🙂🐕 Für die Nichthundler in meiner Timeline: Hormonstörungen sind mittlerweile bei Hündinnen eher Regel, als Ausnahme.

We treasure spiders in our house, they are our insect police. Our daughters don't quite see it that way. When N found a large spider in her room, she got frightened and insisted on setting up a mattress and her duvets in the living room, to sleep downstairs for a few nights.
Castorp my whippet is not allowed in our upstairs bedrooms, but this was his chance to share a bed with one of his family. He settled proudly in the centre of the improvised bed and declared it his own. N could just about squeeze in next to him. She loved it, of course.
Castorp looked at us half defiantly, half accusingly. Can't you see that this is where I belong, snuggling up with my sister? he said. Why don't you let me do this always? Things are so easy, why don't you humans understand how simple it is to live well? Just stop being stuffy and difficult.
