Great to be part of the discussion at ODI Global think tank's book launch and film screening on small island developing states faced with the reality of a #climate crisis. Thanks Emily Wilkinson, Jack Corbett, Avinash Persaud Matthew Bishop (Dr) for insights on a subject that is all too often overlooked.

Jacobson says she's all too familiar w/what can happen when #parents don't get safe sleep info.…She's heard it in conversations at First Candle's bereavement support services.
"I can't tell you how many times…we have parents in the group saying, 'Nobody told me' or 'I didn't know. I didn't know I couldn't have a blanket in the crib. I didn't know about anything.'"
She worries…it's going to be…much harder to get info out to help parents keep their #babies safe.

Christina Stile is the former deputy director for the #NICHD communications office that has been cut. She says the office used to distribute millions of #SafeToSleep publications each year.
"It's possible that someone at #NIH could take this over," she says. But with many of the communications offices at NIH's various institutes reportedly affected by widespread job cuts, "I don't know who would do it."
-
…Alison Jacobson is w/First Candle, a nonprofit that participated in #SafeToSleep since it began. She says the group will continue its efforts to #educate #parents on safe sleep recommendations, but it doesn't have anywhere near the funding needed to replace the resources that #NIH provided.
"State agencies, departments of #health, #hospitals would reach out…& ask for all of these free resources to be sent to them, which they were able to do. We don't have the ability to do that."
-
All of this material was produced & distributed by the office of communications at the #EuniceKennedyShriver National Institute of #Child #Health & Human Development. #Shriver was the aunt of current *Health* Secy #RFKJr. …That entire department was terminated on April 1. Dr. Moon's contact at the office emailed her to share the news.
"They sent an email saying 'just wanted to let you know that since the office has been terminated, so has #SafeToSleep.' And that was it.”

Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury #death among #infants who are less than 12 months old.
#SafeToSleep created the #PublicHealth messaging for this information & distributed it on social media, as well as in pamphlets targeted to specific groups, such as #grandparents, & translated it into different languages. It also provided the materials to #hospitals & #doctor's offices to be handed out to #patients.
-
But now, #Trump has shut down the office responsible for leading that campaign, now known as #SafeToSleep.
Safe sleep recs for #babies include laying them on their back instead of their stomach on a firm mattress in their own space, like a crib or bassinet. Avoid sleeping w/an #infant on a couch or armchair or in a swing or car seat unless in a vehicle. Keep loose blankets, pillows, crib bumpers & other soft items out of their sleep area to avoid the risk of suffocation or strangulation.
-
The federal govt launched the campaign as "Back to Sleep" in 1994 in partnership w/private orgs. Since then, it has helped save thousands of #babies from dying in their #sleep, says Dr. Rachel Moon, a #pediatrician & researcher at UVA who helped write the American Academy of #Pediatrics' guidelines on safe #infant sleep.
"At the very beginning of Back to Sleep, the number of #deaths decreased by 50%, which is huge," Moon says.

#Trump #RFKJr #NIH cuts #SafeToSleep that campaigned to reduce #baby sleep #deaths
“I still remember how, as a new parent, I would often tiptoe into my sleeping son's room multiple times a day — & night — to make sure he was still breathing.
“Thanks to Safe to Sleep, a #PublicAwareness campaign launched three decades ago, I knew that #sleep-related #infant deaths were a leading cause of deaths for babies in the #US.”

All those #drone sightings over the Northeast reminds me of the sightings over #NuclearPower plants a few years ago.
Dozens More Mystery Drone Incursions Over U.S. Nuclear Power Plants Revealed
David Hambling, September 7, 2020
"I recently described how a swarm of drones flew in a restricted area at #PaloVerdeNuclearPowerPlant on two successive nights last September. A new cache of documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (#FoIA) reveals how 24 nuclear sites suffered at least 57 drone incursions from 2015 to 2019 – and Palo Verde itself was overflown again in December, despite new security measures.
"The documents were obtained from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission by Douglas D. Johnson on behalf of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU). The SCU’s main interest is in anomalous aerospace phenomena, more commonly known as UFOs, but Johnson uncovered a series of incidents involving something less exotic but potentially more threatening: commercial drones.
"In the September incidents, a swarm of five or six large drones flew over the Unit 3 nuclear reactor at Palo Verde in Arizona for about eighty minutes, a length of time which suggested they were carrying out a thorough survey of the site. The documents released at the time referred to a similar incident at #LimerickNuclearGeneratingStation in #Pennsylvania.
"Johnson sent a follow-up request to get more details. The response was a terse list of fifty-seven security incidents (#SIDs) involving drones, running from December 2014 to October 2019. This provides little more than the date and location, with no details of the number or type of drones involved. We do not know how many involved multiple, simultaneous drone flyovers. At the time the list was generated, three of the incidents were listed as ‘Open’ and five ‘Closed Resolved.’ but the overwhelming majority, 49 of them, were ‘Closed Unresolved.’ This indicates that for 85% of the cases the #NRC has no idea who the perpetrators are or what they intended, and has given up on finding them."

Roomsharing can be done following safe infant sleep guidelines, which includes:
- Placing the baby to sleep on a firm, flat sleep surface; in their parents’ room for the first 6 months on a separate sleep surface designed for infant sleep, close to the parents’ bed
- Keeping the baby’s sleep space free of soft objects, such as pillows and loose bedding
- Avoiding alcohol, marijuana, opioids, illicit drug use, smoke and nicotine exposure

So ... #Cop28 #Dubai #Cop #UN cop-out? It looks that way. Here is a quick summary of comments from people in the know ... (largely from the #Guardian live-feed)
- Simon Evans of Carbon Brief, who notes that hardly any of the verbs in the latest draft global stocktake text at Cop28 actually ask for action.- the #EU - “"We think there are elements in the text that are fully unacceptable,” says Ribera. “We want to have 1.5C being the safe space. We are going to fight for 1.5C. The current text provides some reference to the science, some reference to 1.5C, but it is not consistent with dealing with #energy. We need to get into deeper discussions with many other partners, and of course with the president. I cannot hide the fact from you that as it stands, the text is disappointing", said Hoekstra."
- ‘Epic mess’ – Bill Hare of Climate Analytics - The climate scientist and chief executive of Climate Analytics, Dr Bill Hare, has been to 27 Cops in person and attended the 28th - Cop26 in Glasgow - virtually due to Covid19.
He told the Guardian the text was an “epic mess” and there was “no way if it was operationalised that it would keep 1.5C in reach. I would say it’s giving every #FossilFuel exporter on the planet everything they need to expand #Fossilfuels production. They might not say it, they might have crocodile tears, but I think any country involved in exporting #coal, #oil or #gas would be privately very happy.”
- “It’s full of weaker proposals than we’d hoped, and internal contradictions,” said Tom Evans, at thinktank #E3G. “On the one hand, it talks of the need to limit temperature rise to 1.5C, to peak #emissions in 2025, to cut emissions 43% by [2030] and 60% by 2055. But all of those require concrete actions. What’s in this text doesn’t add up: you have a long menu of options on the energy section, [but] not including the clear, unambiguous #PhaseOut fossil fuels.”
- David Waskow, at the World Resources Institute, said: “This text doesn’t send the clear signals that are needed to avert the climate crisis. The suggested set of actions is merely a pick-your-own menu.”
- "Meena Raman, #Cop veteran and climate policy expert from the Third World Network, says that she’s relieved that it’s not totally biased towards the wealthy nations, and that there’s likely to be a diversity of reactions from the developing and developed world."
- "A more nuanced take by Bob Ward, the policy and communications director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science - "This has the makings of an historic text, which recognises for the first time in the outcome of a United Nations climate change summit that the production and consumption of fossil fuels need to be cut and replaced by cleaner alternatives in order to achieve net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by mid-century. However, the text is too weak at the moment because it only suggests parties could, rather than should, reduce fossil fuels consumption and production. This should not be optional""
- ‘We need [phase out] in the text’, says Colombia minister
- Susana Muhamad, Colombia’s environment minister, said - “We need [phase out] in the text. We need to acknowledge that we need 43% reduction by 2030, which is not here. We need 1.5C. 2050 is too late. If we don’t get 2030, we don’t have 2050 and we don’t have 1.5C."
- Cedric Schuster, the chair of #AOSIS (Alliance of Small Island States) and a cabinet minister of #Samoa, said in a statement - “We are concerned that the process at this time is not in the spirit of multilateralism. As #SIDS [small island developing states], we feel our voices are not being heard, while it appears that several other parties have enjoyed preferential treatment, compromising the transparency and inclusivity of the process.
We are greatly concerned that this lack of a platform to air our views has resulted in weak language that will obliterate our chances of maintaining the 1.5C warming limit …
Finance and mitigation must go hand in hand. Developed countries must lead because they have the resources to do so, we call on major economies to take the lead here in finance flows.
We will not sign our death certificate. We cannot sign on to text that does not have strong commitments on phasing out #FossilFuels."
