    Dear Senator / Representative:

    Many Americans must provide a doctor's note if they are going to miss five days of work in a row and use any paid leave to cover this time. Because ordinary Americans must justify their medical absences to HR, I want you to draft and push forward legislation that requires the same of Congress, all federally-elected individuals, and all Cabinet appointments, be they confirmed or acting.

    If any person in any of these roles is to miss five days of work for a medical reason, I want I doctor's note provided to Congressional Majority Leaders, Congressional Minority Leaders, and the head of OMB. These notes do not need to be made public, but they should be subject to Freedom of Information Acts.

    Failure to provide a note that would meet normal HR standards would be a loss of pay, starting after day 5 of their absence.

    I want all federal officials - elected, appointed, and acting - subjected to the same medical leave standards required of the rest of us.

  10. As a GP in Germany, I struggle with the claim that “people don’t want to work.” In daily practice, I see the opposite: many patients push themselves to keep working, even when they should rest. They worry about burdening colleagues, unfinished tasks, or upcoming deadlines.

    If we want to understand rising sick leave, we need to look at real factors: increasing workload, constant pressure, lack of recovery time, social isolation, and overall exhaustion. Reducing this to a question of “motivation” ignores both evidence and lived experience.

    In my experience, people who genuinely try to avoid work are a tiny minority. Framing the issue this way feels similar to old narratives about unemployment—oversimplified, misleading, and disconnected from reality.

  28. Across the country, Republican lawmakers have been working to undermine or altogether undo the will of the voters -- by making it harder to pass amendments and laws through citizen-led initiatives.
    In #Missouri, the 2025 legislative session was dominated by Republican lawmakers trying to reverse two major measures that voters had put on the ballot and approved just months before;
    one made #abortion in the state legal again, while the other created an employee #sickleave requirement.
    GOP lawmakers in #Alaska and #Nebraska also have moved to roll back sick leave benefits that voters approved last year,
    while legislators in #Arizona are pushing new restrictions on abortion access, despite voters six months ago approving protections

    At the same time, Republican leaders in #Florida, #Utah, #Montana, #Arkansas, #Oklahoma, #Arizona, #Ohio, #NorthDakota and #SouthDakota have approved efforts to restrict citizen-led ballot initiatives or are considering measures to do so,
    -- essentially trying to make it harder for voters to change laws outside legislatures.

    In some cases, legislators aren’t just responding to measures that voters approved;

    they’re acting shortly after citizen-led efforts failed but came too close for comfort,
    such as an abortion-rights initiative in Florida,
    which in November fell just short of the 60% of votes needed to pass
    and loosen the state’s ban on the procedure.
