  1. #Upards about halfway to #Sturston now, and it's proper dark. It'll only take one break away to get it to the goal...
But #Downards could still snatch it!

Green on the left shows the turn-up starting point, red is where we are now. Sturston goal is the heart on the right.

"This is where the hug has ended up."

So, North of the Henmore Brook, just east of the playing fields but into actual countryside. Still #Upards with the upper hand

  3. Well, last I heard the ball was still in the park. It might have made it to the rugby fields but then headed back to the brook. But, with darkness setting in, it's closer to #Sturston than #Clifton

  4. We're in the pond now, open water swimming and heading to #Sturston. #Upards are in charge here... the crowds are heading to the top of the pond in the park. It's going to be tricky for #Downards to turn this one around

    The ball is still missing...
It seems it is still under the culvert - this is a view from the Dig Street end.

The shout of "heave" keeps emantating from the culvert every now and again.

  6. It looks like everyone's getting wet now: The people in the river (the hug still seems stuck under Shaw Croft car park) and the rest of #Ashbourne is getting rained on waiting for it to emerge. I think I'd head to the pub until the ball comes out.

  7. This is not what the #Downards need. The ball seems to be going up stream to the park and people are waiting for the hug to come out from the bridge on Park Road

  8. And it's back in the river, under the bridge. It is possible that the hug could take the ball all the way up the river, under the tunnel and out into the park. If that happens, it's advantage #Upards

Blue line shows possible route into the park along the underground section of the Henmore Brook... it does happen.

Ball is still under the bridge on Dig Street though.

  9. Finally a change. The ball breaks from the hug in the river, heads "Up" the brook back to Dig Street, then thrown vertically up to the bridge to street level.

    Momentum swings to the #Upards

  11. Here's some vintage footage... well 1998 (and that's nearly ancient!) of the #Ashourne #Shrovetide game

What most outsiders (which I am) don't get is that it's not the all-out violence fest that other #Shrovetide games can be, like the #Atherstone game. #Atherstone is every man for himself. #Ashourne's game is about community, playing hard yes but also looking out for each other.

Notice how, about 6 mins the group is told to back off, and does, when an injury occurs
