  5. A piece off pottery washed out of a midden in an eroded cliff face. Middens were old dumps for household waste often containing shells, bones and broken pieces of kitchenware. In Ireland they can date from a hundred to over 7,000 years old.

    It is actually a piece of shale that's been drilled through by Piddocks (marine bivalves).
